Men's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback to Suffolk

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The visiting Rams of Suffolk University used two second half goals to defeat the MIT men's soccer team, 2-1, on Wednesday night on Roberts Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Suffolk 2, MIT 1
  • Records: MIT (2-4-2 Overall, 0-0-1 NEWMAC), Suffolk (4-2-2 Overall, 1-1CNE)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A pass from Dilin Meloni deflected off a Suffolk defender to Shikhar Motupally who went to the center of the field and sent a shot from almost 25-yards out into the net at 15:14.
  • Action picked up in the second half with Ian Caldwell turning away a Keegan Harrison scoring attempt at 48:42.
  • Hernando Ardila turned away back-to-back Suffolk shots to keep MIT in the lead. After a shot from Gianluca Balestrieri was saved, the Rams defense blocked back-to-back Engineer shots to keep it a one-goal game.
  • Another save by Caldwell on a Harrison shot attempt helped set up the Suffolk offense. Christian Gardner and Zach Vlachos helped to set up Mohamed Mehaya who got a pass in front of the goal and sent a header over Ardila at 71:20 to tie the match.
  • The Rams continued to pressure MIT and eventually broke through again when Mehaya got a defection off an MIT defender in front of the goal and put it past the keeper with just over two minutes remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Motupally netted his third goal of the season.
  • Paolo Mangiafico got the start in goal for MIT and made two saves. Ardila suffered the loss to fall to 0-1-0 as he made two saves in net.
