CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 16 MIT women's volleyball team defeated Wheaton College, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14, in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday night in Rockwell Cage.
Ella Zhou tallied 16 kills while hitting .500 to go along with 12 digs and two blocks for the Engineers as Mary Caroline Mazzanti led the Lyons with 10 kills.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 16 MIT 3, Wheaton 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-14)
- Records: No. 16 MIT (11-3 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Wheaton (6-9 Overall, 0-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: MIT inched out to a 7-3 lead which later grew to 19-10 after a kill from Zhou. Wheaton responded with an 11-5 run as a kill by Mazzanti brought the Lyons within 24-21. The Engineers countered with another kill from Zhou, thwarting the late rally.
- Set 2: The second stanza was tightly played as there were 11 ties and three lead changes. Trailing 16-15, a kill by Eileen Sadati sparked an 8-0 run that put MIT ahead for good. An exchange of points followed until a kill from Ali Gibbs secured the 25-18 win.
- Set 3: A six-point burst gave the Engineers a small cushion before pulling away for a 25-14 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gibbs finished with 13 kills on 15 errorless attempts for a .867 hitting percentage while adding three blocks.
- Sadati posted 11 kills as Kayleigh May totaled 39 assists and 10 digs while directing an offense that hit .354 on the night.
- Sophia Song registered nine digs and three aces while Daphne Gavros contributed seven digs and two aces.
- Celina Henn tallied six kills, six digs, and a block as Jackie Hochberg paced Wheaton with 10 digs.
- Emily Cordell and Ajsa Orban dished out 13 and eight assists, respectively.
UP NEXT:
- Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 4.
- MIT will host Mount Holyoke College and Worcester State University in a tri-match beginning at 1:00 PM.
- Wheaton will host Smith College in a NEWMAC match at 12:00 PM.
