CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 8 MIT women's volleyball team won the MIT Invitational for the second year in a row after defeating Suffolk University (25-6, 25-15, 25-14) and Connecticut College (25-17, 25-18, 25-12) on Saturday.
Ali Gibbs was named the Tournament MVP while
Daphne Gavros earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. Suffolk:
- Set 1: After trading points to open the match, MIT pulled away and claimed a 25-6 victory. In the frame, the Engineers registered nine aces, seven by Ella Zhou and two from Claire Underwood.
- Set 2: Trailing 8-4, a kill from Zhou sparked a 14-3 run. The Engineers maintained a comfortable cushion as a kill by Maya Licznerski clinched the 25-15 win.
- Set 3: Following eight ties and three lead changes that made the score 10-10, a kill from Zhou sparked a 15-4 match-ending run for the hosts.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- As a team, MIT amassed 20 aces with 10 coming from Zhou.
- Jessie Trapp led the way with nine kills as Gibbs posted eight kills on 13 errorless attempts and added two blocks.
- Zhou contributed eight kills while hitting .438 and collected 10 digs.
- Kayleigh May dished out 20 assists as Gavros produced 12 digs and three aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Connecticut College:
- Set 1: MIT won the first three points and stayed in front throughout the opening frame, recording a 25-17 win on a Connecticut College hitting error.
- Set 2: The early stages were closely played as there were eight ties and two lead changes. Knotted at 12, a kill from Underwood kicked off a 13-6 run that was capped by a kill from Emery Fertic.
- Set 3: Trailing 7-4, a kill by Zhou ignited a 21-5 match-ending run by the Engineers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Underwood and Zhou both posted 11 kills.
- Gibbs tallied nine kills, a .436 hitting performance, five blocks, and three aces.
- May compiled 36 assists, nine digs, and two aces.
- Gavros led all players with 10 digs and contributed two aces.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will travel to Carnegie Mellon University for the two-day Carnegie Mellon Quad. The Engineers will kick off the tournament by playing the host Tartans on Friday, September 12 at 6:00 PM.
