CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The MIT men's track and field team recorded nine top 10 finishes on Saturday at Harvard's Beantown Challenge at the Gordon Indoor Track, as senior Nolan Clement moved into 21st nationally in the 60m, classmate Jake Cobb broke the school record in the 1000m and the 4x400m relay closed out the day with a fourth place finish at the predominantly Division I meet.
THE BASICS:
TOP PERFORMERS - Track Events:
- 60m Prelims: Clement was second in his heat and 15th overall in 6.88. Clement finished one spot ahead of Patrick Haertel, as Haertel was third in Heat 5 with a time of 6.99 seconds. Clement and Haertel also recorded automatic NED3 qualifying times in the 60m.
- 300m: Davis Lee was 22nd overall in 35.67. Clement had the second-best time of the 10 MIT competitors in the event, finishing 34th with a PR of 36.19.
- 1000m: Jake Cobb and David Whitaker each finished in the top 10 in the 1K. Cobb had a top five time, taking fourth place with a PR of 2:25.86 to break the MIT program record of 2:26.19 previously held by Aidan Gilson '19. Whitaker was tenth with a PR of 2:26.40 as both runners clocked automatic NED3 qualifying marks.
- Mile: Dylan Fiegener set the pace for four Engineers finishing between 21st and 25th place. Fiegener was 21st in 4:17.90, Michael Eischen was 22nd (4:18.42), Luke Rupert was 23rd (4:18.48) and Nate Martinez took 25th (4:20.62). All four times were PR.
- 3000m: Rookie Gael Medina represented the Engineers in the 3K with a time of 9:18.59. He as 40th overall.
- 60H Prelims: Senior Enoch Ellis finished 11th in 8.53.
- 4x400m Relay: Connor Sterling, Ayman Noreldaim, Davis Lee and Kristian Praizner finished 4th behind three Division I teams in 3:25.37.
TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events:
- High Jump: Anthony Meng was third, clearing 2.00m (6'6.75") on his second attempt at the height.
- Pole Vault: Jaden McKee was the overall runner-up clearing 4.60m (15'1") on his first attempt. Leo Sun also cleared 4.60m, a PR, on his second attempt to capture fifth place.
- Triple Jump: Sawyer Quallen was the runner-up with a jump of 13.69m (44'11"). His mark was an automatic qualifier for the NED3 Championships.
- Shot Put: Justin Buonato's mark of 14.46m (47' 5.25") earned him 15th place and automatic qualification for the NED3 Championships.
- Weight Throw: Buonato was even better in the weight throw, finishing ninth with a throw of 15.74m (51' 7.75"), another NED3 automatic qualifier.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Fiegener, Eischen and Rupert are now 30th, 34th and 35th, respectively, on the indoor qualifying list for the Mile.
- Sun is now 18th nationally in the pole vault at 4.60m. McKee is in the top 10 thanks to his mark of 4.70m at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Both marks on Saturday were automatic NED3 qualifiers.
- Chidubem Chukwu, Jack Wang and Davin Li all established collegiate PRs in the 60m and the 300m.
- Meng's height in the high jump was and NED3 automatic qualifier, he is already top 10 nationally in the event.
