No. 19 Men's Volleyball Earns Victories Over Arcadia and Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The No. 19 MIT men's volleyball team earned two victories on Saturday afternoon, earning a sweep of Arcadia while defeating host Rutgers-Newark, 3-1 in a Saturday tri-match at The Golden Dome. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Scores: 
    • MIT 3, Arcadia 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) 
    • MIT 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20) 
  • Records: MIT 3-0 Overall, Arcadia 0-3 Overall, Rutgers-Newark 1-1 Overall  

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ARCADIA: 

  • Set 1: A kill from Alexander Garrett put MIT up 15-10 but Arcadia chipped away getting to within three at 18-15. The Engineers did not let the Knights get any closer as they closed out the set on a 3-0 run capped by a Garrett kill to seal the 25-18 set win. 
  • Set 2: The teams saw 13 ties and six lead changes, but with the score tied at 18, MIT went on a 7-1 run, and a kill from Matthew Louis sealed the 25-19 set victory. 
  • Set 3: With the set knotted at ten, a kill from Louis kick-started a 4-0 spurt to give the Engineers a 14-10 advantage. MIT continued to build on its lead with a Toth ace securing the 25-17 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Toth led the way with nine kills followed by Matthew Louis with eight and Hansen Fan with seven. 
  • Colin Zimmerman had 26 assists and four kills. 
  • Toth also contributed a team-high eight digs. 
  • MIT hit .306 in the match 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. RUTGERS-NEWARK: 

  • Set 1: MIT raced out to an 8-1 lead, but the host stuck around and eventually pulled within four at 22-18. A kill from Toth gave MIT set point and an attacking error from Rutgers-Newark gave the Engineers the 25-20 win. 
  • Set 2: The Engineers once again build a big lead early, as a Toth ace and a kill from Braeden Baker made it 7-1. A 4-0 run by Rutgers-Newark tied the set at 12 and after the team's traded points, the Engineers went on a 4-0 of their own to take a 17-13 lead. MIT held onto its lead with another ace from Toth giving them the 25-20 win. 
  • Set 3: The Scarlet Raiders built a 9-5 lead and eventually pushed their lead to 17-11. A kill from Toth made it 24-21 but the hosts held on for a 25-21 win. 
  • Set 4: Fan gave MIT a 7-3 advantage and a 4-0 spurt increased the Engineers lead as a kill from Zimmerman made it 11-4. Rutgers-Newark got within three at 19-16, but MIT held on for the 25-20 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Toth led the way with 15 kills followed by Baker with 14 and Fan with eight. Toth also had a team-high five aces. 
  • Louis had five blocks in the match with Michael Rini earning four along with Fan. 
  • Zimmerman dished out 42 assists and had eight digs. Kevin Windisch and Baker each had five. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT returns to the court on Wednesday, January 21 for a road contest at Emmanuel. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
