Babson Races to 80-51 Victory Over Men's Basketball

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Visiting Babson College opened the game on a 20-3 run and never trailed on the way to an 80-51 NEWMAC victory over the MIT men's basketball team on Tuesday night at Rockwell Cage. 

THE BASICS:   

  • Score: Babson 80, MIT 51 
  • Records: Babson 11-5 overall (5-2 NEWMAC), MIT 5-11 overall (1-6 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:    

  • Babson controlled play from the tip, scoring 15 seconds into its first possession when a Thomas Ferdinando layup at 19:45 spurred an 11-0 run to open the game. 
  • An MIT three pointer from Michael Zhang at 16:30 slowed the run, but Babson continued to stretch its early advantage to 20-3 when Ferdinando connected on a three of his own just past the midway point of the first.   
  • Ferdinando connected on five threes in the contest, including one at the 7:21 mark of the first that gave Babson its largest lead of the half, 27-8. The Beavers ultimately took a 39-25 lead into halftime. 
  • A jumper and-one from Isaac Dobie brought MIT within 13 points at the start of the second half, but Babson would go on to lead by as many as 31 points in the final minutes of the second half before closing out the 80-51 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:   

  • Ferdinando and Timmy Mulvey each knocked down five three pointers for Babson, as Ferdinando poured in a game-high 19 points and Mulvey added 17 on 6-of-9 shooting.  
  • Isaac Dobie was the high scorer for MIT, finishing with 16 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Zhang and Wyatt Mowery each added eight points while Dusan Dobric finished with four assists off the bench. 
  • Babson knocked down 16-of-31 three-point shots in the contest while limiting MIT to just 4-of-16 shooting from long range.  
  • The Beavers forced MIT into 19 turnovers in the game, scoring 29 points off turnovers while limiting MIT to just 8 points on 10 turnovers. 

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT will travel to Coast Guard for a 7:00 PM NEWMAC contest on Thursday evening.
