Men's Basketball Falls to Clark in NEWMAC Action, 90-67

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Clark University rookie Aliaun Iscandari scored a career-high 37 points to lead the visiting Cougars to a 90-67 NEWMAC victory over the MIT men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Cage.

Isaac Dobie countered with 27 points for MIT while Parker Spann added 18 points and pulled down a season-high nine rebounds in the setback. 

THE BASICS:   

  • Score: Clark 90, MIT 67  
  • Records: Clark 11-7 (6-3 NEWMAC); MIT 5-13 overall (1-8 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:    

  • MIT had an early 6-4 advantage but Clark quickly seized momentum in the first half. With Clark leading by one, 14-13, at the 12:51 mark of the first half, the visitors used a 10-3 run to take a 24-16 lead at 9:16. 
  • Merlin Gogolin knocked down a pair of free throws at 9:09 to trim the lead back to six but Clark countered, growing its lead to as many as 14 points when Reid Neumann knocked down three free throws at 7:17.  
  • The 14-point advantage was the largest of the first half for the Cougars. MIT trimmed the deficit back down to eight but saw Clark build back its 14-point edge with an 8-2 run to end the opening half.  
  • With Clark leading 49-34 at the start of the second half, Iscandari scored the first seven points for the visitors. Dobie countered for MIT, dropping in five points of his own as MIT continued to trail by 14 at the 15:52 mark of the second.  
  • The Engineers made a push after teh 15:52 mark, as a 10-2 run capped by a triple from Parker Spann at 14:09 brought MIT back within six, 57-51, for the first time since the 9:09 mark of the first. 
  • Clark followed with a 9-2 run of its own, building the lead back into double figures when Iscandari dropped in a layup at 12:58.  
  • The Cougars would go on to lead by as many as 25 points in the late stages of the second half with Kyle Squires knocking down three triples over the final seven minutes of play. 
  • Iscandari put the final mark on his career day with a layup at 1:13 that gave Clark a 90-65 lead.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:   

  • Iscandari added six rebounds, two assists and two steals for Clark.  
  • Dobie has now scored 921 points in his collegiate career.  
  • Squires was 5-of-7 from three-point range for Clark, finishing with 22 points. 
  • Clark finished the game shooting 31-of-55 (56.4%) from the field, outscoring MIT 40-32 in the paint. 
  • The Engineers finished the game at 43.4% from the field, knocking down 23-of-53 attempts. 
  • The MIT bench, paced by ten points from Gogolin, outscored Clark's bench 18-6. 

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT continues NEWMAC play at home on Wednesday evening, January 28, with a 6:30 PM match-up against Springfield.  
  • The Engineers will be looking to defend home court following a 66-57 loss at Springfield on January 7.
