CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Babson College used a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 63-48 victory over MIT in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon. THE BASICS:
  • Score: Babson 63, MIT 48
  • Records: MIT (6-10 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC); Babson (10-7 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Following a back-and-forth first quarter that ended tied at 16, Babson opened the second stanza with a three pointer by Chloe Perreault. However, a layup from Brianna Lebrun narrowed the gap to 19-18 at the 7:55 mark.
  • The score remained unchanged until two free throws by Julia St. Laurent with 6:15 on the clock and after a defensive battle, a layup from Alessa Mendoza increased the Beavers' advantage to 23-18 with just under four minutes to go. A brief exchange of baskets ensued and after almost three minutes of scoreless play, Deana Prasad drained a layup to make the score 25-22 with 32 seconds remaining. Babson replied with a layup from Alyssa Hopps right before time expired.
  • The Beavers carried the momentum into the third quarter as their lead grew to 10 points on two occasions, the last at 34-24 on an Allessia Carlo layup at the 5:56 mark. MIT chipped away at the deficit as a layup by Ruth Lanouette brought the Engineers within 36-30 with 3:37 on the clock. Rosenberg responded with a trey during Babson's next possession while a layup by Emily Flynn increased the cushion to 41-30 with 1:52 left. Mary Lobon and Mariam Abdelbarr sank the first of their two free throws down the stretch to keep MIT within striking distance.
  • The Engineers opened the fourth quarter with a 7-3 run that narrowed the gap to 44-39 after two Lobon free throws at the 7:41 mark. This was as close as it would get as a layup from Mendoza sparked the 12-2 run that put the game out of reach.
