Buonato Leads Men's Track and Field at Harvard Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. — Justin Buonato recorded a PR of 15.37m to win the open Shot Put as the MIT men's track and field competed Friday at the Harvard Invitational at the Gordon Indoor Track. Buonato's victory was one of four top ten finishes on the day for the Engineers. 

THE BASICS:  

  • No Team Score 

TOP PERFORMERS - Track Events: 

  • 60m Hurdles: Enoch Ellis impressed with a top ten finish, taking ninth with an NED3 qualifying time of 8.35 seconds. Ellis finished one spot outside of advancing to the finals, while Stan Nicole was 24th (8.71) and Vedant Naik was 32nd with a PR (8.93) for MIT.  
  • 60m: Patrick Haertel recorded a 19th place finish in 6.94 seconds. He was fourth in his heat and did not advance to the final but his time was automatic NED3 qualifier. 
  • 200m: Naik returned later in the day to record a time of 23.33 in the 200m, taking second in his heat and 41st overall.  

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events: 

  • Pole Vault (Open): Sawyer Garrett and Cole Nguyen finished 12th and 13th respectively, both clearing 4.15m (13' 7.25") 
  • Weight Throw (Open): Leon Schultz was 24th with a throw of 11.73m (38'6") on his third and final attempt. 
  • Weight Throw (Championship) Justin Buonato was 12th in a predominantly Division I field with an effort of 14.96m (49'1") on his first throw. 
  • Triple Jump (Championship): Sawyer Quallen was tenth with a jump of 13.39m (43' 11.25")  
  • Pole Vault (Championship): Jaden McKee was MIT's top finisher, taking eighth after clearing 4.45m (12' 7.25") on his second attempt. Leo Sun also cleared 4.45m on his third attempt to finish 13th. Both earned automatic NED3 qualifying marks. 
  • Shot Put (Open): Buonato won the event with a PR and an NED3 qualifying mark of 15.37m (50' 5.25") on his first attempt. Leon Schultz was 13th with an effort of 13.53m (44' 4.75"), also a PR. 
  • High Jump (Championship): Anthony Meng claimed sixth place, clearing 1.98m (6'6") on his third attempt at the height. His mark was an automatic NED3 qualifier. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Buonato jumped on to the national qualifying list with his effort in the shot put, he is currently sitting in 45th. 
  • Buonato is now tied for 10th on MIT's all-time list in the indoor shot put. 
  • Ellis is now 37th on the national qualifying list in the 60m Hurdles. 

NEXT UP: 

  • MIT will send competitors to Boston University on Saturday for the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
