SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- MIT junior Wyatt Mowery scored 14 points and added seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks, but the MIT men's basketball team dropped a 66-57 final to Springfield College in NEWMAC play on Wednesday evening at Blake Arena.
THE BASICS:
- Score: Springfield 66, MIT 57
- Records: Springfield 4-8 overall (2-1 NEWMAC), MIT 4-8 overall (0-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sean Harrigan set up a Springfield three by Zachary Campbell that put the hosts ahead 14-7 just under eight minutes into the opening half.
- The Pride moved ahead by eight, when Harrigan assisted on a Josiah Evely dunk at 7:50 that made the score 18-10. Springfield would lead by as many as nine points in the first half before MIT cut into the deficit.
- Trailing 24-15 with 5:28 to play before the half, MIT used a 6-2 advantage to trim the lead back to two possessions, 26-21, following a jumper from Isaac Dobie at the 2:17 mark.
- A Springfield free throw from John Paulino with 1:11 to play sent the teams into the break with the Pride leading, 27-21.
- The Pride built an 18-point lead through the opening ten minutes of the second half to take control of the game, as Cedric Rodriguez hit the second of two free throws at the 10:38 mark to give Springfield a 49-31 advantage.
- MIT never quit in the contest, eventually working the 18-point deficit back to seven points when a triple from Wyatt Mowery made the score 59-52 with 3:25 remaining in regulation. However, MIT did not get any closer over the final minutes of the game as Springfield closed out the 66-57 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Evely had a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds for the Pride, as Springfield never trailed in the contest.
- Mowery scored in double figures for the fifth time this season.
- Michael Zhang and Isaac Dobie also finished in double figures for MIT. Zhang had 13 points and Dobie had 11.
- Dobie had three of MIT's 10 steals in the contest.
- MIT shot just 25% (8-of-32) in the first half but knocked down 45.7% (16-of-35) of shots in the second half.
- Springfield finished the game shooting 42.6% (26-of-61) from the field and had a 47-38 advantage on the glass.
