THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 3 MIT 3, Emerson 0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-17)
- Records: No. 3 MIT (15-1 Overall, 5-0 NEWMAC); Emerson (13-4 Overall, 4-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: MIT and Emerson played to ten tie scores through a back-and-forth opening set. Tied at 21-21 and again at 22-22, following a kill from Tolstova, MIT took a 23-22 lead on an Emerson error before the Lions came roaring back to tie the match on a kill by Catherine McDonough. MIT got the upper hand with the final two points thanks to a kill from Smith and an Emerson error to move ahead in the match with a 25-23 win.
- Set 2: The second set was even tighter than the first. Despite Emerson opening the frame with a 5-0 run, the two sides needed to play past the 25-point plateau to decide a winner. MIT erased the early deficit and tied the match at 24-all on an Emerson error. An MIT miscue made it 25-24 Emerson, but MIT engineered three straight points on three straight kills from Tolstova, Smith and Miller Grimes to clinch the set, 27-25.
- Set 3: MIT found room to operate in the third set, leading throughout the frame before using a 5-0 run late to open up a 20-13 lead. The Engineers went on to close out the 25-17 victory to win the match, with Tolstova capping the win with her 12th kill of the evening.
