Wu Powers Field Hockey to 3-1 Win Over WPI

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Back-to-back goals by Meredith Wu in the third quarter propelled MIT to a 3-1 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Tuesday night. Kelsey Rouleau notched the lone goal for the visitors late in the fourth quarter.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 3, WPI 1
  • Records: MIT (10-5 Overall, 7-0 NEWMAC); WPI (7-8 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT controlled the action in the first half as it had advantages in shots (13-1), shots on goal (9-1), and penalty corners (9-0) but the game was scoreless at the break. One of goalie Myles Lakin's nine saves during the first 30 minutes of play came on an MIT penalty stroke with 2:01 left in the second quarter.
  • Wu ended the stalemate 4:10 into the third quarter when she lofted the rebound of her previously saved shot into the cage. The hosts' lead grew to 2-0 with 4:43 left in the frame when Wu dodged multiple defenders and slipped the ball inside the far post.
  • MIT continued to have the upper hand in the fourth quarter, and it eventually increased its margin with 5:19 remaining. During a penalty corner, a tie up ensued by the far post, but the ball came loose and Janie Thomas sent it to the near post where it was redirected by Grace Johnson.
  • WPI ended the shutout 38 seconds later as a pass by Chloe Luongo from the middle of the circle made its way through a crowd and Rouleau tapped it in for the goal.
