Men’s Basketball Drops Season-Opening Exhibition at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Wyatt Mowery scored a team-high 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the MIT men's basketball team dropped a season-opening exhibition, 90-46, at Division I Boston College on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Boston College 90, MIT 46 (Exhibition)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • BC big man Luke Hunger was the story in the opening half. Hunger finished 7-for-8 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the three-point range, scoring 22 points for the Eagles.
  • A 13-0 BC run forced an MIT timeout with the score at 16-1 just 3:30 into the contest. MIT settled into the game following the timeout. Steele Labagh knocked down a three-pointer at 16:18, while a second-chance layup from Eric Wentz made the score 19-6 at 12:50.
  • BC would eventually grow its first half lead to 23 points, at 38-15, when Colby Duggan made a three-pointer at 7:16.
  • MIT worked the lead back under 20 points when Isaac Dobie made the second of two free throws with 1:57 left before the half to make the score 46-27. Back-to-back BC buckets over the final 1:41 sent the Eagles into the break leading 52-27.
  • Wentz made a jumper to open the second half but the BC lead would eventually grow to 39 points when an Ernest Shelton jumper at 10:42 made the score 71-32.
  • Mowery scored five of MIT's 17 second-half points and grabbed five of his team-high seven boards after the break.
  • The Eagles continued to control the game through the second half, with Armoni Zeigler delivering an emphatic steal and dunk at 8:52 and another at 1:58 that made the score 90-44.
  • Engineer first year Aiden Li scored the final two points of the contest, sinking a pair of free throws at the 37-second mark to make the final 90-46.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Lost in the final scoreline was MIT's considerable effort on the boards, as the Engineers matched the Eagles 31-31 on the glass.
  • MIT played with consistent effort on the defensive end of the floor, forcing 10 BC turnovers.
  • MIT knocked down 23-of-33 attempts from the free throw line, including an 8-for-10 effort from the stripe from Aiden Li.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT's exhibition schedule continues on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 PM, with a match-up against crosstown rival Harvard University.
