No. 13 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Lasell in Three Sets

NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 13 MIT women's volleyball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule by defeating Lasell University, 25-11, 25-15, 25-22, on Friday night. Brennan Fritts paced the Engineers' defense with 10 digs.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 13 MIT 3, Lasell 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-22)
  • Records: No. 13 MIT (19-4 Overall); Lasell (13-14 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1: Facing a 6-4 deficit, a kill by Eileen Sadati ignited an 18-1 run. Lasell claimed four of the next five points, but a kill from Fritts and a hitting error secured a 25-11 victory for MIT.
  • Set 2: The Engineers won the first four points and later had a 22-10 advantage courtesy of a kill by Sarah Hutchinson. The Lasers put together a 4-1 burst; however, a serving error gave MIT set point at 24-14. An MIT serving miscue extended the frame, but a kill by Julia Tolstova clinched the 25-15 win.
  • Set 3: The early stages were closely played as there were seven ties and two lead changes. A kill from Hutchinson led to four unanswered points that put the Engineers ahead, 14-11. Lasell stayed within striking distance, and it eventually tied the set at 17-17. MIT countered with a 5-2 spurt, but the Lasers continued to attack as they came within one point on two occasions, the last at 23-22. A serving error resulted in match point, and after a Lasell timeout, the Engineers won the match on a block by Fritts and Miller Grimes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Grimes registered a team-high seven kills, a .500 hitting percentage, and three blocks while Sadati and Hutchinson both finished with six kills.
  • Kayleigh May tallied 22 assists, five digs, three aces, and two blocks as Sophia Song posted six digs and three aces.
