CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With 32 assists in a 25-23, 25-14, 25-17 victory over NEWMAC foe Salve Regina University on Tuesday night,
Kayleigh May became the sixth player in MIT women's volleyball program history to record 3,000 career assists and the first since Nicole Gagnier '15.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 5 MIT 3, Salve Regina 0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-17)
- Records: No. 5 MIT (13-1 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (5-11 Overall, 1-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: A kill by Eileen Sadati sparked a 13-5 run that resulted in a 19-10 advantage after an ace by May. Salve Regina battled back and eventually tied the frame at 23-23 on an ace from Abby McRoy. MIT capitalized on a serving error and a kill by Miller Grimes to thwart the comeback attempt.
- Set 2: A kill by Frankie Spadorica knotted the set at 8-8, however, three consecutive kills from Sabine Smith ignited a 17-6 run that resulted in a 25-14 victory.
- Set 3: The Engineers raced out to an 11-2 lead which moved to 17-8. Despite the deficit, the Seahawks continued to attack as an ace from Kate Andy brought them within 20-17. MIT used a kill from Smith, a block by Emery Fertic and May, and a trio of hitting errors to close out the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sadati led all players with 11 kills and added two blocks as Smith totaled nine kills, nine digs, and four aces.
- Sophia Song contributed seven digs, followed by five from Maya Licznerski.
- Anouk Jansen paced Salve Regina with nine kills while Kalena Stavish produced 12 assists and six digs.
- Andy dished out nine assists as Madelyn Homer paced the Seahawks with nine digs.
- McRoy and Jenna DeFrancesco both registered two blocks.
UP NEXT:
- Both teams will be back in action on Friday, October 9 with road matches.
- MIT will visit Mount Holyoke College for a 6:00 PM NEWMAC match while Salve Regina will travel to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a 7:00 PM non-conference tilt.
