Football Rallies Past Maritime for Third Straight NEWMAC Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Trailing 14-7 in the third quarter, the MIT football team rallied for a 21-14 NEWMAC victory over Maritime College on Saturday afternoon at Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium. Jimmy Conners and Michael Dennison scored second half touchdowns and Wyatt Alford and the MIT defense sealed the victory with a pair of big plays in the fourth quarter as the Engineers won for the third straight game.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 21, Maritime 14
  • Records: MIT (5-2 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC); Maritime (2-7 Overall, 0-6 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Martime's opening drive spanned nine plays and over eight minutes of game time but was hindered by penalties despite a roughing-the-kicker call on the Engineers that helped the visitors hold on to the ball.
  • The first Maritime drive ended with a punt at 6:58 but MIT's opening drive was cut short when Ryan Treptow was sacked by Wyatt Vreelan on 2nd and nine, forcing a long third down and a punt.
  • Maritime was forced to punt on its second drive as the Engineers got the ball back at the end of a scoreless first quarter. Brendan Spellman capped the four-play MIT drive three plays into the second quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run up the middle to give MIT a 7-0 lead.
  • The defenses dug in for the remainder of the second quarter, including an MIT interception from Connor McHale, before the Engineers took the 7-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Engineers were set to receive the second half kickoff, but a muffed return instead set up Maritime at the MIT 33-yard line. The visitors took advantage, needing six plays to punch the ball into the end zone when Jaden Rotella completed a short pass to Gianni Spinelli.
  • The ensuing MIT drive, hindered by a false start penalty, went three-and-out. Maritime took over at its 40 following the MIT punt and the Privateers took advantage. Maritime moved the ball 60 yards on eight plays, with Rotella connecting with Enrique Hernandez on another short pass on first and goal to give Maritime its first lead of the day, 14-7, with 6:23 left in the third.
  • Trailing for the first time in the contest, MIT's offense found its rhythm. Treptow completed three passes to three different receivers, and Jimmy Conners rushed four times, including an 18-yard touchdown run through a sizeable hole opened by the offensive line, to tie the contest at 14-14.
  • Maritime took possession as the game moved into the fourth quarter and moved the ball from its own 35-yard line inside the MIT red zone. With first and ten from the MIT 18, Rotella dropped back to pass and was sacked by Chase Fishman. The senior jolted the ball free on the hit, and Alford scooped it up and returned it to the MIT 40.
  • MIT only needed two plays on its next drive to retake the lead. Following a five-yard gain from Spellman, Treptow zipped a pass down the middle of the field to Michael Dennison. The senior tight end outran the defense, 55 yards to the end zone to give MIT a 21-14 lead with 8:13 left in regulation.
  • Maritime's last drive of the game started at the 8:05 mark of the fourth. The Privateers moved the ball methodically into scoring position, aided by a pass interference call in the end zone that set the visitors up with first and goal at the MIT 10. A one-yard run was followed by a pair of incompletions to set up fourth-and-goal. Alford made the play for the MIT defense, sacking Rotella on fourth down to force a turnover on downs.
  • Conners helped the Engineers secure the victory with 29 rushing yards on the final MIT drive that ended with a kneel down from Treptow.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Dennison's 55-yard fourth quarter touchdown reception helped him surpass 1,000 yards in his career.

  • Alford finished the game with eight tackles, including a tackle for loss, to go with his fumble recovery and sack.
  • Treptow finished the game 7-for-12 for 125 yards, including his 55-yard strike to Dennison.
  • Conners racked up 86 yards on 14 carries, while Spellman added 79 yards on seven carries as MIT used four different backs to total 190 rushing yards on Saturday.
