Women’s Basketball Overpowers Wheaton, 73-47

NORTON, Mass. – A season-high scoring performance that featured four players with double digits in points helped MIT defeat Wheaton College, 73-47, in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night. Ruth Lanouette had a game-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals for the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After conceding the opening basket, layups by Riley O'Sullivan and Mary Lobon put MIT ahead for good as it went on to build a 19-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Engineers controlled the action for most of the second quarter as their lead grew to 34-11 courtesy of a 15-2 run that featured seven points from O'Sullivan. However, Wheaton countered with a 15-4 run during the final four minutes of the frame, making the score 38-26 at halftime.
  • MIT maintained its comfortable cushion in the third quarter, but a pair of free throws brought the Lyons within 47-35 with just under four minutes left. Brianna Lebrun replied with a jumper during the Engineers' next possession, kicking off an 11-4 run down the stretch.
  • MIT had the upper hand in the final frame as it outscored Wheaton, 15-8, en route to the 73-47 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • O'Sullivan generated 17 points, four rebounds, one steal, and one assist as Olivia Joseph totaled 11 points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
  • Lebrun finished with 10 points and three assists while Rachael Zacks grabbed six rebounds and six steals.
  • Deana Prasad contributed six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
  • The victory resulted in the Engineers' sixth win in a row.
