No. 15 Men's Volleyball Sweeps St. Joseph's University Long Island; Falls to No. 16 New Paltz in Four

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 15 MIT men's volleyball dropped a four set UVC match to No. 16 New Paltz but rallied for a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's University Long Island on Saturday afternoon at the Hawk Center. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Scores:  
    • New Paltz 3, MIT 1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-17) 
    • MIT 3, St. Joseph's University 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) 
  • Records: MIT 11-2 Overall (1-1 UVC), New Paltz 11-5 Overall, (2-0 UVC), St. Jospeh's 2-7 Overall 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. NEW PALTZ: 

  • Set 1: Alexander Garrett gave MIT a 7-6 advantage but a 3-1 run capped by a kill from Peter Brutschin gave the Hawks a 9-8 lead. A kill from Henry Garewal and an ace from Garrett put MIT up one but the hosts quickly tied the match. From there, MIT went on a five-point run which featured four kills from Braeden Baker to go up 15-10. New Paltz made it a 21-18 contest on a block, but MIT ripped off four of the next five points to take the opening set, 25-19.  
  • Set 2: Garewal put the Engineers up 7-5 with a kill before three-straight points from the hosts gave them an 8-7 lead. The set saw six ties in the early portions before a 4-0 run gave the Hawks a 17-13 advantage. MIT chipped away and a 4-0 run got them to within one at 20-19 but an ace from Matt Kudlinksi gave New Paltz the 25-21 win.  
  • Set 3: A Baker kill got the Engineers to with two at 16-14, but the Hawks held on to the lead with a 6-2 run making it a 22-16 set and an Engineer service error game the host the second set, 25-19.  
  • Set 4: New Paltz jumped out to a 5-0 lead and did not look back. Nate Toth got MIT to one on a kill, but the Engineers could not pull even with the home team as a Teplansky kill secured the 25-17 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Baker led MIT with 19 kills and two aces. Toth had five kills and, also grabbed two aces. 
  • Maddox Brandenburg had a team high six blocks. 
  • Colin Zimmerman paced MIT with 31 assists while George Chang had 11 digs. 
  • Geoff Ndoria had a team-high 12 kills for the Hawks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ST. JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY LONG ISLAND: 

  • Set 1: After a kill from Garrett put MIT up 15-12, the Golden Eagles got three straight points to tie the set at 15. The teams traded two-point runs before the Engineers were able to pull away slightly as an attack error gave MIT the 25-21 set win.  
  • Set 2: The Engineers jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead on a Garrett kill. MIT held on to the lead and used a 6-1 run with a kill from Ryan Espinoza to earn the 25-18 win.  
  • Set 3: MIT once again built a sizable lead to open the set, going up five at 8-3. The Golden Eagles made it a one-point set off an Engineer attack error but a 4-0 run with two kills from Garrett put MIT up 15-10. Once again St. Joseph's got to within one with a 3-0 run that made it 21-20 but MIT scored the next four with a Garrett kill securing the 25-20 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Garrett led the way with a match-high 20 kills followed by Toth with 10. Toth also led the Engineers with two aces and eight digs.  
  • Brandenburg had four blocks followed by Garrett with three. 
  • Jensen Fiskin put up a team-leading 27 assists while Nathaniel Black had 12.  
  • Shaun Mischler had 10 kills and Dominic Ruggiero had 23 assists for the Golden Eagles.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT is back on the court on Saturday, February 28 when they welcome Rivier to Rockwell Cage for a 1:00 PM match.
