Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 17 Men's Volleyball Defeats Rivier, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 17 MIT men's volleyball team earned its 11th 3-0 victory as the Engineers defeated Rivier on Saturday afternoon.  

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, Rivier 0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-23) 
  • Records: MIT 13-3 Overall, Rivier 8-9 Overall  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1: A kill from Tyler Dickinson cut the MIT lead to 10-7, but the Engineers went on an 8-0 run capped by an ace from Matthew Louis to pull ahead 18-7. A 6-0 spurt from the Raiders cut the hosts' lead to three at 19-16, but the Engineers held on as a service error gave them the opening set, 25-20. 
  • Set 2: A kill from Maddox Brandenburg gave MIT a 5-1 advantage and an 8-0 run later in the set put MIT up 17-4. Kills from Hansen Fan and Colin Zimmerman helped secure a 25-11 set win. 
  • Set 3: Everett Boyer gave Rivier a 10-7 lead in the set, as the visitors controlled the early portions of the set. After a service ace by Michael Rini cut the Engineers deficit to one, the Raiders went on to build a 14-11 advantage. The Engineers continued to get to within one, but a kill from Alexander Garrett got the teams even at 17. A service error and two Kody Sodoyer kills put the Raiders back in the lead, but MIT quickly responded with a 3-0 run of its own to pull even at 20. Nathaniel Black gave the Engineers match point with a kill, and an attack error gave MIT the 25-23 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Nate Toth and Garrett led MIT with 11 kills each. Henry Garewal had seven kills in the match. 
  • Rini collected 5 blocks while Toth and Garrett each had three. 
  • Zimmerman led the way with 23 assists while Nathaniel Black had 12. 
  • Toth also led the Engineers with six digs while George Change finished with five. 
  • Tyler Dickinson led Rivier with six kills while Justin Barish posted a team-high 17 assists and four digs. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT remains in Rockwell Cage as the Engineers will welcome Elmira for a UVC matchup on Friday, March 6 at 6:00 PM.
