CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 5 Smith College used a 14-5 run in the second half to create some distance before going on to defeat MIT, 67-53, in the final game of the NEWMAC women's basketball regular season on Saturday afternoon.
Mary Lobon compiled a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points, three assists, two steals and a block for the Engineers while Hannah Martin led all players with 15 points and added four assists and two steals for the Bears.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A jumper by Maggie Fleming kicked off an 8-3 burst that gave Smith a 16-11 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the opening frame. MIT replied with Ruth Lanouette hitting a jumper right before the quarter ended.
- The Engineers stayed close as a layup by Lobon narrowed the gap to 18-15 at the 7:21 mark of the second quarter. Following an exchange of possessions, Felicia Fongemie knocked down a three pointer that sparked a 14-5 run which included seven points from Martin and gave the Bears a 32-20 halftime advantage.
- MIT generated 6-2 spurt that featured three pointers from Riley O'Sullivan and Deana Prasad during the opening 44 seconds of the third quarter, narrowing the gap to eight points. However, a trey by Virginia Johnson led to an 8-1 run that reestablished a double-digit lead for Smith as it went on to build a 51-38 advantage at the end of the period.
- The Bears opened the fourth quarter with seven straight points, resulting in its largest lead of the day, before going on to take the 67-53 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lanouette totaled 12 points, three assists, one block, and one steal as Prasad and Brianna Lebrun both contributed 11 points. O'Sullivan rounded out the Engineers with eight rebounds and seven points.
- Fongemie posted 13 points while Johnson generated 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Uta Nakamura notched nine points, four steals, three assists, and one block for the visitors.

- Both teams will continue their season in the first round of the NEWMAC Championship on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:00 PM.
- MIT will be the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Springfield College while Smith secured the top seed and will host No. 8 Emerson College.
