WALTHAM, Mass – The MIT softball team opened the 2026 season with a sweep of Endicott on Wednesday night at the Bentley Softball Field, which included a walk-off win in game one and a come-from-behind victory in game two.
This is the first sweep of the Gulls by the Engineers.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:
- The Gulls scored quickly to open the game as Abby McClaflin and Mia Mitchell executed a double steal with Mitchell taking home for the first run of the day. Ava Kelley then singled home McClaflin on a single to left.
- A wild pitch plated Lauren Sundquist for the first MIT run in the second and Layla Thiessen beat out an infield single which scored Julia Mattiace and tied the game at two.
- A bases loaded walk in the fourth gave Endicott the lead, but Sharona Huang got Ella Tower swinging to end the inning.
- Leading off the fifth, Ava Ladd took the fourth pitch of the at-bat over the centerfield fence to tie the teams back up at three.
- Endicott looked to plate the go-ahead run in the sixth, but Mia Mitchell was thrown out at the plate. Delaney Benevides looked to score on a wild pitch but the Gulls were able to get her out at home.
- Ladd reached on an error to lead off the second and Arianna Kumar followed reached on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch put pinch runner Amanda Huang and Kumar in scoring position and a single to center by Sundquist plated Huang with the game-winning run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Thiessen and Sundquist led MIT with two hits each in the contest.
- Sharona Huang went the first four, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Emily Watson got her first collegiate win as she tossed the final three innings, scattering four hits with three walks.
- Kristen Beebe worked 5.2 innings for Endicott, giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Emma Sheehan took the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:
- The Gulls once again plated two runs to open the games with doubles from McClaflin and Elyse Saccoccio accounting for the RBI hits.
- Ladd singled home Benevides in the third to cut the Endicott lead in half and a bases clearing single by Kumar gave MIT a 4-2 lead. Holland Poe then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Kumar for the fifth run of the inning.
- Kylyn McLaren scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to cut the MIT lead to 5-3, but that was the last scoring of the game, which was called after the top of the sixth due to darkness.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Eight different Engineers got a hit in the game with Kumar leading the way with two.
- Sarah Blackett got the win for MIT as she pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Nicole Johnston got the save as she pitched the final two innings, allowing just two walks.

- The Engineers are back on the field on Saturday, March 14 when they host Simmons for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass.
