Softball Overpowers Simmons For Doubleheader Sweep

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The MIT softball team outscored Simmons 27-3 in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field. The Engineers saw 11 different players record at least one hit in the doubleheader.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: MIT 12, Simmons 3 
    • Game 2: MIT 15, Simmons 0 
  • Records: MIT (4-0 Overall), Simmons (3-9 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:  

  • The MIT bats came alive in the third as the Engineers batted around and plated five runs in the inning. Maggie Feng led off with a homer on a 1-0 pitch and after Piper Kinney got the next two outs, MIT proceeded to score four more runs with two outs. A two-out walk to Ava Ladd was followed by straight doubles by MIT. Arianna Kumar doubled home Ladd and Lauren Sundquist followed with a double to score Kumar for the third run. Sundquist then scored on a double from Holland Poe who scored the final run of the frame on a single from Julia Mattiace
  • Abigail Carvalho got Simmons on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. 
  • A seven-run bottom of the fourth helped the Engineers put the game out of reach as Kumar, Poe, and Feng recorded two-run doubles while Olivia Scarpaci added an RBI double to give the Engineers a 12-1 lead. 
  • The Sharks tacked on two runs on the fifth on a two-run single from Emery Kreidel-Reimer, but Emily Watson got Dakota Vaudreuil swinging to end the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Feng, Kumar, Poe, Mattiace, and Scarpaci all had two hits in the game.  
  • Feng, Kumar, and Sundquist all knocked in three runs in the game.  
  • Sharona Huang got her second win of the season, pitching four innings with one run on four hits. Watson gave up two runs and two hits in her inning of work while striking out two.  
  • Kinney fell to 2-2 as she threw 3.1 innings.  

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:  

  • MIT scored in each of the first three innings to put the game out of reach. 
  • The Engineers got the offense started in the bottom of the first with two-run singles from Ladd and Nicole Johnston while Poe had an RBI single.  
  • Poe recorded another two-run single in the second while Pearl Mitchell knocked in two more runs with a single through the left side. Kumar recorded an RBI fielder's choice and Sienna Wilson scored the 12th MIT run of the day off a Sharks error. 
  • Mitchell tripled home two runs in the third and Johnston and Layla Thiessen wrapped up the scoring with RBI singles to account for the 15-0 final. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Sarah Blackett got her second win of the season with her one-hit shutout. She walked four and struck out six. 
  • Thiessen and Poe led the Engineer offense with three hits in the game.  
  • Feng, Mitchell, and Johnston all had two hits. 
  • Ladd, Kumar, Ellie Hasegawa, and Benevides collected one hit in the contest. 

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT will head to Florida for their spring break trip where they will open play on Friday, March 20 with an 11:30 AM contest against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse followed by an 1:45 PM contest against Salem St.
