Baseball Drops Series Opener at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. —  Montclair State surged to a 9-0 lead in the first inning on the way to a lopsided 20-1 victory over the MIT baseball team in the first game of a three-game weekend series on Friday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Montclair State 20, MIT 1 (7 inn.)
  • Records: Montclair State 9-3 (Overall); MIT (0-7 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Montclair State jumped out to a 12-0 lead as the Red Hawks pounded out seven hits, while also reaching base on three walks and a pair of hit batters in the bottom of the first inning. Zach Sterns and John Tomsho each had extra base hits in the frame, as Tomsho drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI double.  
  • The hosts added seven more runs in the second inning. Sterns delivered his second double of the day, driving in a run to make the score 12-0, but the big blast came from Chase Fischer, as his three-run home run made the score 15-0. Matt Kaliske added a two-solo home run to put Montclair State ahead 16-0. 
  • Following a scoreless third, MIT got on the board in the fourth inning when Jack Finnegan hit a two-out single to score Owen Malone from second. Eitan Moore also singled in the inning for the Engineers. 
  • Montclair State added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the sixth to give the contest its 20-1 scoreline. Christian Petino Jr. recorded an RBI double in each inning for Montclair State. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Malone was the only MIT player with more than one hit, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.  
  • MIT starter Ty Phoenix made his fourth appearance of the season but was lifted in the first inning after giving up seven runs, six earned. Rookies Dylan Karmin and Deven Pietrzak and graduate student Julian Murray combined to complete the game for the Engineers. 
  • Colin Dowlen pitched five innings, giving up just four hits and one earned run to pick-up the win for Montclair State.  
  • 11 different Red Hawks recorded at least one hit in the contest, with Fischer finishing with two hits and game-high four RBIs.

  • The Engineers and Red Hawks will play game two of their three-game set on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
