Baseball Eases to 14-1 Win Over New England College; Morris Wins First as MIT Head Coach

READING, Mass.  —  First year Yamato Takahashi finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored as the MIT baseball team gave Chris Morris his first victory as MIT head coach with a 14-1 win in seven innings over New England College on Thursday afternoon at Austin Preparatory School.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 14, New England College 1 (7 inn.)
  • Records: MIT (1-9 Overall); New England College (2-12 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a scoreless first, Takahashi broke the game open early, as a bases-loaded three RBI double in the bottom of the second inning gave the Engineers a 3-0 lead. With one out and two on base, NEC looked destined to escape the inning when James Dempsey hit a ground ball to third, but an NEC error opened the door for Takahaski and he delivered to give MIT the early lead.
  • The Pilgrims got one run back in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly but that was the only run that came off of MIT starter Owen Malone. Malone was lifted after 2.2 innings, as Jonathan Freedman relieved Malone in the middle of the third inning. Freedman was the first of four MIT relievers to enter the contest as the Engineers put together 4.1 innings of scoreless work out of the bullpen.
  • MIT add two more runs in the third inning, with Dalton Chi scoring on a Zev Moore RBI double to make the score 4-1. The second MIT run in the inning came on a strikeout that should have ended the inning, but a dropped third strike allowed John Dwyer to reach first base and Zev Moore to score from third.
  • MIT took its 5-1 lead into the fourth inning before breaking the game open with a seven-run inning that chased NEC starter Dillan Abbate after 95 pitches on the day.
  • Maximo Del Pino, Zev Moore, Malone, James Dempsey, Takahashi, and Eitan Moore all drove in run in the inning, with the final two runs coming on infield hits to increase the MIT lead to 12-1.
  • In the sixth, the Engineers added a run on an error before Del Pino singled to drive home the final MIT run in the 14-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT matched its season-best with 12 hits as a team, the Enigneers also tallied 12 hits in a loss at UMass Boston on March 9th.
  • Takahashi, batting out of the eight spot in the MIT lineup, was the only player in the contest with three hits. He also added a stolen base.
  • Zev Moore had a pair of hits and reached base on a walk. Moore was one of four players to score a pair of runs.
  • Malone pitched 2.2 innings as the starter, giving up two hits and one earned run while recording a pair of strikeouts.

UP NEXT:

  • The Engineers return to Austin Prep in Reading, Mass. on Saturday to host a pair of game against Husson University. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 1:30 PM.
