MIT Softball Rebounds to Blank No. 13 UW-Oshkosh After Tight 7-5 Loss to Wooster

Clermont, FL. – Sarah Blackett pitched a complete game shutout in the MIT softball team's 3-0 win over No. 13 Wisconsin-Oshkosh as the team rebounded from a 7-5 loss earlier in the day to Wooster. 

THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: Wooster 7, MIT 5 
    • Game 2: MIT 3, #13 UW-Oshkosh 0 
  • Records: MIT (9-1 Overall), Wooster (8-6 Overall), #13 UW-Oshkosh (9-3) 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WOOSTER: 

  • Lauren Sundquist walked and stole second and then came around to score on a two-out infield single by Julia Mattiace to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the second. 
  • Wooster put up four runs in the top of the third, using three singles up the middle while another run scored on a wild pitch. 
  • The Fighting Scots tacked on another run with a single from Cate Barkdoll that made it 5-1. 
  • Back-to-back singles from Delaney Benevides and Layla Thiessen set up bottom of the fifth, and they then both got into scoring position on a wild pitch. Pearl Mitchell then hit an RBI groundout and Ava Ladd plated Thiessen to make the score 5-3. 
  • Wooster responded with an RBI single by Cate Barkdoll in the sixth that made it 6-3. 
  • A two-run sixth helped MIT pull to within one. Benevides beat out a single to short that scored Holland Poe and Thiessen followed with another infield single that scored Mattiace. 
  • Larken Koran hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh that gave Wooster an insurance run and made it a 7-5 game, but MIT went down in order as the Fighting Scots held on for the 7-5 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Thiessen went 3-4 from the leadoff spot with an RBI while Benevides went 2-3 with a run sn RBI. 
  • Sharona Huang went the first three innings for MIT and fell to 2-1. Emily Watson came in and tossed the last four innings. 
  • Jillian Meszaros got the win for Wooster to move to 5-1 while Tori Conner got her first save of the game. Meszaros went 5.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and two Ks.  
  • Cate Barkdoll went 4-4 for Wooster. 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. UW-OSHKOSH:  

  • Benevides scored on a fielder's choice from Nicole Johnston to plate the first MIT run of the day in third and scored on a double from Ladd to make it 2-0. 
  • Blackett retired UW-Oshkosh in order in the third and worked around a two-out single in the fourth to keep the Titans scoreless. 
  • Olivia Ullman hit a two-out double in the fifth, but again Blackett was able to keep the team off the board. Blackett then got the Titans in order in the seventh as Maddie Crick struck out swinging to end the game.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Blackett tossed her first complete game shutout as she went all seven innings, scattering three hits while walking just two with seven strikeouts to improve to 5-0. 
  • Thiessen and Benevides book-ended the lineups with two hits each. 
  • Sunquist and Poe also had two hits in the contest.  
  • Kiran Sanford fell to 5-1 with 3.0 innings of work, surrendering three runs on seven hits with no walks and five Ks. 

UP NEXT:  

  • The Engineers will have tomorrow off and will return to action on Tuesday, March 24 with a 10:00 AM game against Kalamazoo followed by a 12:15PM contest against Colby.
