Softball Powers Past Kalamazoo; Falls Late to Colby

Clermont, FL. – The MIT softball team used two five-run innings to run past Kalamazoo in the first game on Tuesday, however the Engineers could not hold off Colby College, which scored five runs in the sixth to come-from-behind in game two for a 6-4 win. 
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: MIT 11, Kalamazoo 4 
    • Game 2: Colby 6, MIT 4 
  • Records: MIT (10-2 Overall), Kalamazoo (0-11 Overall), Colby (7-1 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. KALAMAZOO: 

  • Emma Newlove hit a two-out grandslam to center on a full count to put Kalamazoo up 4-0 in the top of the first. 
  • The Engineers quickly responded, scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame. Arianna Kumar and Lauren Sundquist worked bases loaded walks to cut the Hornets lead in half. A fielder's choice from Holland Poe and a throwing error tied the game up, and a double from Olivia Scarpaci plated Poe and gave MIT the lead. 
  • Ladd, Scarpaci, and Julia Mattiace all had RBI doubles in the second for the Engineers while Kumar added an RBI single as another five-run inning made it a 10-5 Engineer lead. 
  • Ladd scored the 11th run of the day on a passed ball in the fifth.  
  • Nicole Johnston came in for Emily Watson in the sixth and worked around a one-out walk to secure the win for MIT. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Watson earns her third win as she threw six innings, scattering four hits.  
  • Scarpaci went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBI. 
  • Layla Thiessen and Delaney Benevides each had two hits in the game as did Poe and Kumar. 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. COLBY:  

  • After three scoreless innings, Maggie Feng got MIT on the board with an two-run triple down the right-field line. Benevides then beat out an infield single and Feng came around to score on a throwing error to make it 3-0. 
  • An RBI groundout from Emma Burnham in the fifth cut the Engineer lead to two, however Johnston and Benevides executed a delayed double steal to put MIT back up by three. 
  • The Mules rallied in the sixth, using three singles and a double to take the lead. Ella Wilcox gave Colby the lead with an RBI double and Juliana Kiley singled home an insurance run to make it 6-4. 
  • Sundquist reached on a one-out error, but Sharlotte Stazinski got the next two Engineers out to secure the win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Stazinski went the full seven for Colby to improve to 2-0. She scattered nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts. 
  • Burnham led the Mules with three hits and three RBI. 
  • Sarah Blackett got the start for MIT and went 5.1 innings while Johnston went the final .2 innings and took her first loss of the season. 
  • Ladd and Benevides each had two hits for MIT in the game. 

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT wraps up its Spring Break trip tomorrow with a 10:00 AM game against DePauw followed by a 12:15 PM contest against St. Lawrence.
