Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Defeats No. 23 DePauw and St. Lawrence to Wrap Up Spring Break Trip; Kumar Collects 100th Career Hits

Clermont, FL. – The MIT softball team wrapped up its spring break trip with two wins, including a decisive 7-0 win over No. 23 DePauw. The Engineers went 8-2 over the 10 games in Florida. 

Arianna Kumar collected her 100th career hit in the Engineers' win over St. Lawrence.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: MIT 7, DePauw 0 
    • Game 2: MIT 7, St. Lawrence 1 
  • Records: MIT (12-2 Overall), No. 23 DePauw (10-5 Overall), St. Lawrence (1-7 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. DEPAUW: 

  • After a scoreless four innings, the Engineers broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs. Lauren Sundquist singled to leadoff the inning and Holland Poe followed with a double. After an intentional walk to Olivia Scarpaci, a sacrifice fly by Maggie Feng plated the first run of the day. A walk to Delaney Benevides put the second run on the board and back-to-back singles from Layla Thiessen and Nicole Johnston increased the Engineer lead to 4-0. Ava Ladd then hit a two-run double to give the Engineers the 6-0 advantage. 
  • Scarpaci knocked in another run with a single to left in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-0. 
  • Sarah Blackett held the DePauw offense in check through the first six innings allowing just three hits. Ella Kuenster led off the top of the seventh with a double to left. A walk and a groundout put runners in scoring position with two outs, but Blackett got a groundout to third to end the game and secure the shutout.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • All nine Engineers recorded a hit as they out-hit the Tigers 15-4. 
  • Ladd led the way with three hits while Thiessen, Johnston Arianna Kumar and Sundquist all had two. 
  • Blackett moves to 6-0 with her complete game shutout. She scattered four hits with four hits and two walks. 
  • Izzy Deveau falls to 3-2 as she allowed seven runs over six innings. 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ST. LAWRENCE:  

  • Julia Mattiace got the scoring going with an RBI triple in the second that scored Kumar. 
  • After Feng scored the second MIT run on an error, Holland Poe singled to plate the third Engineer run and Kumar came across to score on a St. Lawrence error.  
  • Marina Juan got the Saints on the board with a single in the third but Sharona Huang left the bases loaded as she got Emily Wendt to ground out and end the threat. 
  • Mattiace hit a two-RBI double to center in the fifth to increase the MIT lead to 6-1 and Scarpaci added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it a 7-1 lead. 
  • Abby Gallas singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Huang got the next three in order to secure the win. 

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Kumar got a single in the seventh to record her 100-career hit. She finished the game with two hits and two runs scored.  
  • Poe led the way with three hits for MIT and Mattiace also had two hits in the contest and a team-high three RBI. 
  • Huang tossed a complete game to improve to 2-1. She allowed just four hits and one unearned run with two strikeouts and three walks. 

UP NEXT:  

  • The Engineers head back to Cambridge and will open up NEWMAC play on Saturday, March 28 with a doubleheader against Emerson. Game one will begin at 1:00 PM and will be played at Rotch Field in Boston.
