Boston, Mass. – The MIT softball team rallied to take game two, 6-1, after dropping a tough 7-5 decision in extra innings on Sunday afternoon to Emerson on Rotch Field in both teams' first NEWMAC action of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE:
- Emerson took advantage of two hit-by-pitches and a bases loaded walk to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Sarah Blackett got Avi Kuperman swinging to end the frame.
- Maggie Feng singled and stole second, and Layla Thiessen worked a walk with two outs, but Cal Sheehan got the final out to keep MIT off the board. Ava Ladd out hit a leadoff double in fourth, but Sheehan retired the next three Engineer batters.
- Three Emerson errors in the sixth helped MIT score two runs and an RBI single from Olivia Scarpaci tied the game at three with one out. Sheehan was able to escape more trouble, retiring the next two Engineers to leave the bases loaded.
- Both teams got a runner on in the seventh, but neither could push the winning across as the game went into extra innings.
- Kuperman doubled to leadoff the eighth and plate the go-ahead run. Two more RBI singles and a bases loaded walk helped the visitors build a 7-3 lead. Emily Watson came in relief of Blackett to get the final out of the inning.
- Poe scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 7-4 and an RBI single from Thiessen made it a 7-5 game with two outs, but the Lions got the final out to escape with the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Blackett took her first loss of the year (6-1) as she tossed 7.2 innings and struck out a career-high 15 batters.
- Sheehan improved to 3-5 with eight innings of work, scattering six hits and only allowing one earned run.
- Kari Sorensen was the lone batter to notch a multi-hit game, finishing 2-2 with an RBI.
- Feng stole three bases in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO:
- Nicole Johnston got the scoring for MIT with an RBI single in the first.
- MIT extended its lead to four with a three-run third. Kumar hit a triple to right to plate Ladd and Poe and Scarpaci followed with RBI singles.
- Kuperman doubled in the fourth to get the Lions on the board, but Ladd caught a liner from Kari Sorensen and doubled off Riley Caiazza at third to end the inning.
- After Arianna Kumar reached on an error, Lauren Sundquist took a 1-1 pitch over the leftcenter wall to increase the MIT lead to 6-1.
- Emily Watson allowed just one baserunner over the final three innings to secure the 6-1 win for the Engineers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Watson tossed six innings of two-hit ball allowing just one run with one walk and three strikeouts. She moves to 4-0 on the year.
- Kate Regan falls to 0-4 as she allowed four earned runs on eight hits.
- Thiessen swiped four bases on the day and collected two hits.
- Sundquist hit her second homer of the season.

- MIT heads out on the road for a doubleheader against Salve Regina. Game one is scheduled for a 4:00 PM first pitch on Friday, April 3.
