Baseball Falls on the Road at Mitchell, 23-12

NEW LONDON, Conn.  —  Mitchell College pounded out 17 hits over eight innings to earn a 23-12 non-conference victory over the MIT baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Mitchell 23, MIT 12 (8 inn.)
  • Records: MIT (4-10 Overall); Mitchell (10-6 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Mitchell offense was relentless, scoring 10 runs in the game's first two innings as the Mariners responded to every MIT rally to run away with the contest.
  • MIT scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, including an RBI single from Joey Severson, but Mitchell responded with three runs on three hits to move ahead, 3-2.
  • The Engineers tied the contest on a Dalton Chi RBI single in the second, but Mitchell surged ahead in the home half of the inning, scoring seven runs while taking advantage of three hits and five walks, including four walks that brought home runs.
  • Trailing 10-3 in the top of the third, MIT closed the gap to 10-7 with a four-run inning that included a pair of two RBI singles from Eitan Moore and Chi.
  • After coming on to record the final out of the second, Deven Pietrzak got Mitchell to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third to keep MIT within range. The Engineers continued to chip away in the fourth, closing the gap to 10-8 on the strength of an RBI single from John Dwyer.
  • Unfortunately, the 10-8 deficit was as close as the MIT rally would get, as the Mariners scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth before adding four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead, 19-8.
  • MIT did add four runs in the top of the seventh, including a pair of runs on a two-RBI triple from Owen Malone, to extend the game into the eighth inning, 19-12.
  • However, Mitchell countered again with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to move ahead 23-12. A scoreless top of the eighth from the Engineers in the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Chi hammered out four hits in six at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring two runs. Severson also had four hits to lead MIT, also driving in three runs and scoring two runs. The duo combined for eight of MIT's 12 hits in the game.
  • Malone's triple gave him 21 total bases on the season, second only to Chi's 27.
  • MIT used nine different pitchers in the contest while the Mariners countered with six.
  • Dwyer now has seven hits and six RBIs in his past five games.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT returns to NEWMAC play on Saturday with a pair of game versus WPI. The doubleheader will be played at Clark University beginning at 3:00 PM.
