Softball Sweeps Salve Regina in NEWMAC Road Doubleheader

NEWPORT, R.I. – The MIT softball team outscored Salve Regina 23-5 in a doubleheader sweep on Friday night at Toppa Field.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: MIT 12, Salve Regina 4 
    • Game 2: MIT 11, Salve Regina 1 
  • Records: MIT (15-3 Overall, 3-1 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (3-13 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE: 

  • The Engineers raced out to an 8-0 lead after two innings of play. In a four-run first, Lauren Sundquist hit a two-run single and scored on an error while Layla Thiessen also scored on an error by the Seahawks. 
  • MIT scored its next four runs with two-outs in the second. Arianna Kumar hit a single up the middle to make it 5-0. After a Sundquist single, Holland Poe tripled to make it a 7-0 Engineer lead and came around to score on a double from Julia Mattiace that made it 8-0.  
  • Skyla Oliveira got Salve on the board with an infield single in the bottom of the second. 
  • Ava Ladd singled in the ninth Engineer run in the third and Kumar hit a sacrifice fly to make it a nine-run advantage for the visitors.  
  • The Seahawks took advantage of an error in the third and tacked on two more runs on a single to center from Victoria Geisser in the fourth got Salve to within six. 
  • Sundquist hit a double to plate Kumar and Mattiace's sacrifice fly scored Sunquist for the last runs of the day.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Kumar and Sundquist led the way for MIT with three hits a piece while Mattiace and Thiessen each had two. 
  • Sundquist and Poe each knocked in three runs while Kumar and Mattiace had two RBI in game one. 
  • Sharona Huang earned the win for MIT tossing four innings allowing three earned runs on five hits to improve to 3-1. Emily Watson finished out the game and allowed just one hit. 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO: 

  • MIT jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings. Kumar and Poe had RBI singles while Sundquist stole home to give MIT a quick 3-0 lead in the first. 
  • Delaney Benevides doubled home Thiessen to make it 4-0 and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ava Ladd to increase the MIT lead to five. Sundquist followed with an RBI single and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mattiace.  
  • Ladd and Kumar had run scoring hits in the fourth that increased the Engineer lead to 9-0. The Seahawks got on back in the bottom of the inning on a double to right center from Emily Cronin.  
  • Kaaya Mehta doubled home Ellie Hasegawa to make it 10-1 and Mehta later scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Emma Plourde was hit by a pitch in the fifth and made it to second on a wild pitch, but she was left stranded as MIT secured the sweep.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Kumar and Poe led MIT with three hits each. Thiessen and Benevides each had two at the top of the lineup.  
  • Ladd led the Engineers with two RBI in the game. 
  • Watson got the win with three innings of work where she allowed just two hits to improve to 5-0. Sarah Blackett tossed the last two innings and allowed just the one run on two hits with four strikeouts.  

UP NEXT:  

  • The Engineers continue their road NEWMAC swing with a 12:00 PM doubleheader at Babson tomorrow, Saturday, April 4.
