TROY, N.Y. – The MIT men's lacrosse team fell to No. 18 RPI, 17-10, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Bryce Metalios tallied four goals, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers for the Engineers.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 18 RPI 17, MIT 10
- Records: MIT (1-3 Overall); No. 18 RPI (6-2 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Zach Bleil set up Riley Pierce for the first goal of the game after 1:44 elapsed, but RPI rattled off five straight goals in a span of 2:10 to go ahead for good. Pierce found the back of the net midway through the opening frame, however, RPI added a pair of quick goals late in the period for a 7-2 advantage.
- RPI increased its lead five minutes into the second stanza, but Bobby Jones replied with an unassisted marker a minute later. RPI countered with back-to-back goals, moving the score to 10-3 with 5:41 on the clock. MIT narrowed the gap 50 seconds later when Metalios connected on a pass from Garrett Campagna for a man-up tally.
- RPI had the upper hand in the third quarter as it outscored the Engineers, 6-3, creating a 16-7 lead. Metalios notched two goals with Dominic Zuniga and Campagna earning assists while Pierce redirected a feed from Hayden Calabretta.
- RPI recorded what proved to be its final goal of the day just over a minute into the fourth quarter. MIT followed with a goal by Metalios and back-to-back tallies from Jones which completed the hat trick.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Pierce recorded three goals, one assist, and eight groundballs as Campagna finished with three assists and three groundballs.
- Kaden Fenno was 15-of-23 in faceoffs and collected eight groundballs while Isaiah Nathaniel generated five groundballs and one caused turnover.
- In net, Collin Lung made six saves in the first half as AJ Sachwitz closed out the game with nine saves.
