Game Recap: Baseball |

Dempsey, Rubin Lead Baseball Past WPI, 4-1

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.  —  First year James Dempsey went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs and starting pitcher Chase Rubin pitched 6.1 scoreless innings to lead the MIT baseball team to a 4-1 NEWMAC victory over WPI on Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 4, WPI 1
  • Records: MIT (7-10 Overall, 4-0 NEWMAC); WPI (9-9 Overall; 0-5 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a scoreless first inning, MIT scored three runs on two hits in the top of the second to seize a 3-0 lead. With one out in the inning, Owen Malone doubled to right. John Dwyer followed, reaching on a walk to give MIT runners onfirst and second. That set the stage for Dempsey as he ripped a triple to left center to score both runners. Dempsey then scored on a wild pitch as Maximo Del Pino worked a one-out walk. Unfortunately, the Cambridge Engineers left Del Pino stranded on the bases, as Alex Hee came on for WPI starter Joseph Conti and got back-to-back strikeouts of Eitan Moore and Dalton Chi to end the inning.
  • The game moved to the fifth inning before MIT added another run on a two-out Zev Moore solo home run to make the score 4-0.
  • MIT starter Chase Rubin worked around five hits and five walks over 6.1 scoreless innings to earn the victory. Holding a 4-0 advantage, Rubin got Jack Zawacki to fly out to open the seventh inning before walking Greyson Baldizar to end his day.
  • Deven Pietrzak entered for Rubin and struck out Ben Seidler before issuing a walk to Zachary Roethlein that put runners at first and second with two outs. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third, but Pietrzak ended the threat by striking out Liam Keblin.
  • The game moved into the eighth, where Malone reached on a one-out walk, but MIT never threatened in the top half of the inning. Malone moved from third base to the mound in the bottom half of the inning, issuing a leadoff walk toMatt Shea before collecting three straight outs to send the game to the ninth.
  • The Cambridge Engineers went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to send the game to the bottom of the ninth with MIT still leading, 4-0.
  • WPI opened the home half of the ninth with a triple off the bat of Zawacki. Baldizar then walked to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Malone picked up a big strikeout of Seidler before getting Roethlein to ground out for the second out of the inning. Zawacki scored on the groundout to break the shutout but Malone got Keblin looking to end the game and secure a 4-1 MIT win.
