Women’s Lacrosse Cruises Past Clark, 23-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – The MIT women's lacrosse team remained undefeated in NEWMAC play following a 23-0 victory over Clark University on Wednesday night. Laura Day led all players with five draw controls and added a goal and a caused turnover for the Engineers.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 23, Clark 0
  • Records: MIT (8-3 Overall, 5-0 NEWMAC); Clark (2-7 Overall, 0-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Nina Petulla opened the scoring when she connected on a pass from Annica Lam after 29 seconds expired, sparking a 9-0 run by MIT. Petulla would add another goal while Lam went on to record back-to-back goals. Ashley Thomas and Alexis Reinard both had a goal and an assist as Jillian Butler buried a pair of free-position goals.
  • The Engineers generated five goals during the second quarter, resulting in a 14-0 advantage. A goal from Thomas 45 seconds into the frame was followed by an unassisted blast by Gwen Flusche. Thomas was a factor in the next two goals as she scored on a pass from Flusche and then she found Petulla to complete the hat trick. Butler capped the first-half scoring by redirecting a feed from Lydia Birknes.
  • MIT tacked on another five goals in the third quarter, increasing its lead to 19-0. Day registered the first goal by converting her free position attempt as Petulla and Butler had unassisted goals. Reinard scored a free position goal with a player advantage and Flusche found the back of the net with 28 seconds remaining.
  • In the fourth quarter, Reinard notched a goal then earned an assist on a strike from Samantha Moorhead. Cecilia McCarthy added a free position player-advantage goal while Moorhead produced the final goal of the night courtesy of a feed from Laila Salgado.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Reinard finished with three goals, two assists, and two caused turnovers while Thomas posted three goals and two assists.
  • Petulla and Butler both registered four goals as Petulla added four draw controls.
  • Flusche totaled three goals, one assist, four groundballs, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers while Mairin Anderson contributed three groundballs and three draw controls.
  • Loralei Quinn bolstered the defense with three caused turnovers and two groundballs.
  • In net, Pauline Vien made one save in the first half as Christina Fradella collected one save, two groundballs, and one caused turnover in the second half.
  • This was the third time in program history and the second time against Clark that the Engineers held their opponents without a goal. The first time this occurred was a 20-0 win at the University of Dallas in 2014.
