No. 25 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Wheaton, 22-6; Flusche Breaks Career Draw Controls Record

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 25 MIT scored just 42 seconds into the game and never looked back as it went on to defeat Wheaton College, 22-6, in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. In addition to producing three goals and one assist, Gwen Flusche collected four draw controls to break the career draw controls record of 274 that was set by Kira Schott '16. Jessica Chamberlin powered the Lyons with two goals and one assist.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 25 MIT 22, Wheaton 6
  • Records: No. 25 MIT (12-3 Overall, 8-0 NEWMAC); Wheaton (10-5 Overall, 5-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Flusche opened the scoring by connecting on a pass from Ashley Thomas, setting off a string of seven unanswered goals. Georgia Qua put Wheaton on the board with a free position goal at the 6:12 mark, but MIT followed with player-advantage goals from Alexis Reinard, Annica Lam, and Jillian Butler. Alexis Antonellis made the score 10-2 with 2:44 on the clock; however, Lam scored a pair of goals during the final 56 seconds of the frame.
  • She carried the momentum into the second quarter as she redirected a feed from Thomas after 2:08 elapsed. The Lyons countered with three consecutive goals, trimming the deficit to 13-5 with 4:42 remaining. Bridget McDwyer set up Chamberlin for back-to-back goals, the second while being down a player, and then Natalie Bilodeau scored on a pass from Chamberlin. The Engineers replied with two goals as Nina Petulla was a factor in both. After earning an assist on a blast by Flusche, she buried a free position goal.
  • MIT had the upper hand in the second half as it outscored Wheaton, 7-1, for a 22-6 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Thomas racked up two goals and seven assists while Lam amassed eight goals.
  • Mairin Anderson posted five draw controls and two caused turnovers as Taylor McAndrew registered four groundballs and one caused turnover.
  • In net, Pauline Vien notched three saves and a groundball in the first half while Molly Dulde closed out the game with three saves, one groundball, and one caused turnover.
  • Saige Winslow led all players with eight draw controls as Kate Hallee had four of her own.
  • Kristina Krochko contributed three groundballs and one caused turnover while Antonellis chipped in two groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • In net, Jenna Langan made six saves in 23 minutes of action as Katie Geis corralled four saves in 37 minutes.
