No. 24 Softball Walks-Off Wellesley in Game One, Takes Game Two For Sweep

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Maggie Feng got the No. 24 MIT softball team a walk-off win in nine innings in game one, and the Engineers got three RBI from Arianna Kumar in game two as MIT swept Wellesley in NEWMAC action on Wednesday afternoon at the Wellesley Softball Field. 
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: MIT 4, Wellesley 3 (9 Innings) 
    • Game 2: MIT 8, Wellesley 2 (6 Innings – Called to darkness) 
  • Records: MIT (25-3 Overall, 11-1 NEWMAC); Wellesley (13-10 Overall, 8-6 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE: 

  • Alena Mulhern walked to lead off the first and came around to score on a one-out triple from Brooklyn Awad. After a two-out walk to Jill Colgan put runners on the corners, Emily Watson got Sarah Wicker to fly out to second and end the inning. 
  • The Engineers responded in the bottom of the inning. Layla Thiessen led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Delaney Benevides. With two outs, Arianna Kumar singled down the right field line to score Thiessen. 
  • Anisa Rodriguez singled to lead off the second and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Diana Borrison. Rodriguez then scored the go-ahead run on a double from Natalie Nicol.  
  • Thiessen singled and stole second in the third, and Benevides was hit by a pitch, but Wicker left them stranded to preserve the Blue lead.  
  • The Engineers got a single from Ava Ladd and a walk to Lauren Sundquist in the sixth but both were left stranded. Maggie Feng worked a one-out walk in the seventh and then stole second. Down to the final strike, Benevides beat out an infield single which allowed Feng to come home with the tying run. Lauren Seyller got the final out to send the game to extras. 
  • Sharona Huang got Wellesley in order in the top of the eighth and with Ladd on second, Kumar worked a four-pitch walk. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third with two outs but they would be left stranded. 
  • Alena Mulhern singled home Rodriguez in the ninth to give the Blue the lead. Olivia Scarpaci reached on an error which advanced Sienna Wilson to third with no outs. Feng then doubled to right-center to plate both runners and give MIT the walk-off win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Thiessen led MIT with two hits while Rodriguez led the Blue with two hits. 
  • Huang got her eighth win of the season with five innings of work. She scattered three hits and allowed one unearned run with one walk and two Ks. Watson went four innings allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. 
  • Wicker went 6.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Seyller fell to 4-5 as she threw 1.2 innings with two hits and two runs.  

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO: 

  • Benevides doubled down the left field line and scored on a single by Ladd in the first, but the Blue took the lead in the top of the second with RBI singles from Brynne Mellady and Nicol. 
  • The Engineers quickly responded with a five-run bottom of the second. Thiessen got the scoring started with an RBI single and Ladd followed with a two-run triple. Kumar then singled home Ladd for the fourth run of the day for MIT and then scored the sixth run on a double from Sundquist.  
  • Kumar then plated two more runs in the sixth on a single through the right side as the game was called after six due to darkness.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Thiessen led the way, going 3-4 from the leadoff spot with two runs scored and an RBI. 
  • MIT had five players with two hits in the contest.  
  • Kumar went 2-4 with three RBI. 
  • Huang improved to 9-1 as she went four innings allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and two Ks. Watson tossed the final two innings allowing just two walks and one hit. 
  • Seyller took her sixth loss of the year from Wellesley as she allowed six runs on eight hits. Colgan tossed the final 4.1 allowing two runs on six hits. 

UP NEXT:  

  • The Engineers are back on the field Friday, April 24 when they head to Wheaton for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
