No. 24 Softball Takes Game Two From Wheaton in Doubleheader Split

NORTON, Mass. – After falling in a 1-0 pitcher's duel in game one, the No. 24 MIT softball team rallied in game two to earn a split of the NEWMAC doubleheader against Wheaton on Friday afternoon at the Clark Softball Field.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: Wheaton 1, MIT 0 
    • Game 2: MIT 9, Wheaton 5 
  • Records: MIT (26-4 Overall, 12-2 NEWMAC); Wheaton (14-15 Overall, 5-9 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE: 

  • Ella Molinari singled to center to lead off the bottom of the first and came around to score on a double to center by Mady Bryan. 
  • Holland Poe hit a double down the leftfield line in the second with one out, but Sophia DeLaRosa got the final two outs to keep Wheaton in the lead 
  • DeLaRosa and Emily Watson held both offenses in check through the rest of the game with Watson scattering six hits and DeLaRosa allowing just four as the Lyons took game one by a 1-0 score. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Delaney Benevides led MIT with two hits while Poe and Arianna Kumar accounted for the other two Engineer hits. 
  • Watson falls to 8-1 and allowed just one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts. 
  • DeLaRosa earned her seventh win as she allowed just the four hits with one walk and five Ks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO: 

  • Poe reached on an error to lead off the second and Kaaya Mehta singled to put runners on first and second. Both advanced a bag on a sacrifice bunt from Olivia Scarpaci and Poe scored the first run of the day on a sacrifice fly from Maggie Feng
  • Lauren Sundquist hit a double to center to open the fourth and Poe followed with a homer to right to give MIT a 3-0 advantage. A wild pitch and an RBI from Julia Miller cut the MIT lead down to one after four innings. 
  • A four-run fifth increased the MIT lead to 7-2. Ladd, Mehta, and Scarpaci all had RBI singles while Kumar was able to score on a passed ball. 
  • Molinari hit a three-run homer to center in the sixth to cut the MIT lead to 7-5, but Sundquist and Mehta added RBI hits in the seventh for some insurance runs to put them up 9-5.  
  • After a one-out walk to Mady Bryan, Sarah Blackett got the last two outs to secure the win for the Engineers.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Mehta and Sundquist each had three hits in the game. Mehta recorded her first collegiate multi-hit game.  
  • Benevides, Ladd, and Kumar all had two hits in the contest.  
  • Poe hit her first homerun as an Engineer. 
  • Sharona Huang moved to 10-1 with five innings pitched. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and three Ks. Blackett finished the game allowing three runs on one hit with two walks. 
  • Peyton Blankenheim-Brown falls to 8-7 as she went four innings allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits.  

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT returns to action, tomorrow, Saturday, April 25 for a key NEWMAC tilt against WPI. The games will be played in Brighton, Mass. at the Harrington Athletics Village with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM.
