No. 9 Men’s Track and Field in Control After Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The No. 9 MIT men's track and field team swept all five events on the opening day of the 2026 NEWMAC Men's Track and Field Championships at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. MIT's performance on the day was highlighted by Owen Sondag's meet record performance in the 10,000m, as Sondag broke a 15-year-old meet record. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Team Score: 89 points (1st of 6) 
  • Team Standings: 1. MIT (89 points); 2. WPI (32); 3. Coast Guard (25); T4. Babson (21); T4. Springfield (21); 6. Wheaton (6) 

TOP PERFORMERS - Track Events: 

  • 10,000m: Sondag earned his first NEWMAC title and All-Conference first team honors, setting a meet record with a time of 30:48.91. 
  • 100m Prelims: Nolan Clement and Patrick Haertel finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the prelims. Clement recorded a time of 10.68, while Haertel finished in 10.73 to advance to Saturday's final. 
  • 110m Hurdles Prelims: Enoch Ellis posted the top prelim time in 14.36 to lead the field into Saturday's final.  

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events: 

  • Hammer: Justin Buonato claimed the NEWMAC title with an effort of 49.59m (162' 8") to earn All-Conference honors 
  • Javelin: MIT swept All-Conference honors in the javelin, as Marc Baker captured the NEWMAC championship with a throw of 60.10m (197' 2") and Jonah Goldstein was second with a mark of 59.22m (194' 3"). 
  • Long Jump: Sean Huckleberry's jump of 7.10m (23' 3.5") captured the NEWMAC title and first team All-Conference honors.  
  • Pole Vault: Jaden McKee earned his first NEWMAC championship by clearing 4.85m (15' 11").  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Engineers took the top spot in all five events on the day, including a 1-2 finish in the javelin. The top two finishers in each event earn All-Conference honors. 
  • Huckleberry entered the meet as a two-time NEWMAC champion in the triple jump, the long jump title is his first. 
  • Buonato won last year's shot put title winner.

  • The final day of the NEWMAC Championships will begin tomorrow at 10:30 AM.
