No. 9 Men’s Track and Field Wins Program’s 24th NEWMAC Championship

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The No. 9 MIT men's track and field team claimed the program's 24th NEWMAC Championship on Saturday at the 2026 NEWMAC Men's Track and Field Championships, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. MIT earned 13 All-Conference finishes on Saturday, including Luke Rupert's meet record victory in the 3000m Steeplechase. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Team Score: 253 points (1st of 6) 
  • Team Standings: 1. MIT (253); 2. WPI (202); 3. Springfield (125); 4. Babson (87); 5. Coast Guard (78); 6. Wheaton (50) 

TOP PERFORMERS - Track Events: 

  • 100m: Nolan Clement earned a spot on the podium with a third-place finish with a time of 10.62. Patrick Haertel was seventh in 10.94. 
  • 110m Hurdles: Enoch Ellis earned the NEWMAC championship and All-Conference first team honors in 14.36. 
  • 200m: Kristian Praizner was sixth in 22.05. 
  • 400m: Praizner claimed All-Conference honors with a runner-up finish in 49.41. 
  • 400m Hurdles: Ellis was MIT's top finisher in eighth with a time of 56.67. 
  • 800m: Jared Steins won the NEWMAC championship and All-Conference first team honors in 1:52.84. 
  • 1500m: Tim Neumann and David Whitaker swept the All-Conference spots with a 1-2 finish in 3:55.22 and 3:55.41, respectively. 
  • 3000m Steeplechase: Rupert set the NEWMAC meet record in 9:10.16, winning the NEWMAC title and All-Conference first team recognition. 
  • 5000m: Dylan Fiegener earned the championship and All-Conference first team recognition in 14:56.53. 
  • 4x100m Relay: Dylan Bradford, Clement, Chidubem Chukwu and Haertel won the event in 41.76 to claim All-Conference first team honors. 
  • 4x400m Relay: Connor Sterling, David Lee, Praizner and Jared Steins finished second in 3:18.80. 

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events: 

  • Discus: Leon Schultz's throw of 41.93m (137' 6") earned All-Conference second team honors as runner-up in the event.  
  • High Jump: Anthony Meng tied with WPI's Brett Gerlach for second, clearing 1.90m (6' 2.75") to earn All-Conference recognition.  
  • Shot Put: Justin Buonato repeated as champion with a throw of 15.94m (52' 3.75") 
  • Triple Jump: Sean Huckleberry repeated as champion with a jump of 14.39m (47' 2.5"). 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • MIT has taken the team title in all but three of the conference's championship meets. 
  • Patrick Haertel was awarded the NEWMAC Men's Track and Field Laurels of Academic Excellence, which recognizes the student-athlete with the highest GPA competing at the Championship. 

NEXT UP: 

  • MIT will compete at the New England Division III Championships on Friday and Saturday at Springfield College.
