Pitching Helps Lead Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass.  – The MIT softball team got two strong pitching performances from Emily Watson and Sharona Huang to help the Engineers earn a doubleheader sweep of Wentworth on Wednesday afternoon at Sweeny Field.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Scores:  
    • Game 1: MIT 6, Wentworth 1 
    • Game 2: MIT 3, Wentworth 1 
  • Records: MIT (19-3 Overall); Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-19) 

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE: 

  • Ava Ladd doubled home Layla Thiessen and Delaney Benevides to give MIT a 2-0 lead in the third and came around to score on a single to center from Lauren Sundquist. Holland Poe followed with a two-run triple to increase the lead to 5-0. 
  • Sundquist tripled home Ladd in the fourth to put MIT up by six. 
  • Wentworth loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and a hit by pitch gave the Leopards their first run of the game. Emily Watson then got Sydney Miccileto fly out to Benevides in center to end the inning. 
  • Lauren Trostel worked a one-out walk and Abby Delia doubled with two-outs to put two runners in scoring position, but Watson got Jenna Roche to groundout to Kumar at short to end the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Watson improves to 6-0 with her complete game. She allowed just the one run on five hits. 
  • Sundquist finished 3-4 with two RBI while Benevides and Ladd also had multi-hit games. 
  • Ladd and Poe each knocked in two runs.  

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO: 

  • Ladd gave MIT a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first, but Wentworth tied it up in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout by Lauren Trostel. 
  • The game remained tied until the sixth when Pearl Mitchell was hit by a pitch to plate Kumar with the go-ahead run. Olivia Scarpaci then added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 MIT.  
  • Brianna Miller worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, but Sharona Huang got Jasmine Feliciano to ground out to end the game.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Huang tossed a complete game allowing one run on six hits to improve to 5-1. 
  • Thiessen and Kumar each had two hits in the game for MIT. 

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT will host Springfield on Friday, April 10 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM. The games will be played at the Boston University Softball Field in Boston, Mass.
