MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Ava Ladd and Sharona Huang of the MIT softball team have been named the NEWMAC Player and Pitcher of the Week for the Week ending May 3. The Engineers went 5-1 during the week, including four NEWMAC victories to secure the number two seed in this week's NEWMAC Tournament.
Ladd became the third player in program history to knock in 100 runs as they reached the milestone with the game-winning double in the team's 1-0 victory over Coast Guard in the second game of the doubleheader. Ladd also had the walk-off hit in game one, which gave MIT a 10-9 win. Ladd hit .435 (10-23) with two doubles and a homerun while knocking in eight runs and scoring seven over the Engineers six games. They currently rank third in the NEWMAC with 43 RBI.
Huang went 3-1 during the week, pitching to a 1.31 ERA as she allowed just three earned runs in 16 innings pitched. She tossed a complete game shutout in MIT's 1-0 win over Coast Guard where she allowed just five hits with no walks. Huang surrendered just two walks during her four appearances and currently has a 13-3 record with a 2.74 ERA.
MIT will open the NEWMAC Tournament tomorrow, Tuesday, May 5 with a 4:00 PM contest against the winner of the 2:00 PM game that will feature Springfield and the winner of tonight's Coast Guard and Wheaton game.
