Windham Scores Twice, Storton Earns First Career Victory as Men’s Soccer Tops Emmanuel, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two goals from Woods Windham helped Andrew Storton earn his first career victory as head coach of the MIT men's soccer program as the Engineers rallied for a 2-1 non-conference win over Emmanuel in the team's season opener on Tuesday evening at Roberts Field.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Saints got on the board first when Luis Pimentel played the ball across the front of goal to Benjamin Anderson on a set piece for an impressive diving header goal 5:09 into the first half. 
  • MIT tied the game up just over ten minutes later. A shot by Gianluca Balestrieri was saved by Emmanuel goalkeeper David Derk, but the rebound fell directly to Windham, who placed the ball into the corner of the net at 15:56. 
  • Despite holding a 9-2 advantage in shots during the first half, MIT entered halftime tied, 1-1. 
  • The pace picked up in the opening ten minutes of the second half, with each team earning yellow cards. 
  • MIT goalkeeper Paolo Mangiafico was called into action with a pair of saves in the 58th minute of play before adding another stop at 76:47 to keep the scoreline even.  
  • Three minutes after Paolo Mangiafico's third save of the half, Windham scored his second goal of the game. Shikhar Motupally earned the assist, delivering a cross into the penalty area that Windham redirected into the back of the net. 
  • The Engineers held on to the advantage over the final ten minutes of play, limiting Emmanuel to just two shots, both off target, to help Storton collect his first career victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT finished the game with a 23-7 advantage in shots. Paolo Mangiafico made four save to earn the win in goal.
  • Windham's two-goal effort was a career best. His second half goal was his first career game-winner.  
  • Motupally was MIT's leading scorer last season with five goals and two assists.  
  • Storton spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Connecticut College before taking over the MIT program this season. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers head out on the road for a 3:00 PM contest at Suffolk on Friday, September 4. The Saints return to play on Friday as they host Rhode Island College at 7:00 PM.
