Late Second Half Surge Give Men's Soccer a 2-2 Draw Against Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – After falling behind 2-0 early in the second half, the MIT men's soccer team rallied, using a goal with 10 seconds remaining to earn a 2-2 tie against Suffolk at East Boston Memorial Park on Friday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 2, Suffolk 2 
  • Records: MIT (1-0-1 Overall), Suffolk (0-1-1 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Suffolk had the early advantage in a defensive first half, taking three shots in a six-minute span midway through the first. MIT goalkeeper Hernando Jose Ardila turned away a shot by Logan Hawley to keep the game scoreless. 
  • The Rams struck quick and fast in the second half, scoring two goals within a minute of each other, both off the foot of Mohamed Mehaya and both set-up by Dylan Trachtenberg. The first goal came at 52:21 with the second at the 53:20 mark. 
  • Woods Windham had a chance to put MIT on the board, but his shot was turned away by Nathan Harlow. The Engineers had another scoring opportunity erased by an offside call. 
  • Jonah Gurion and Gianluca Balestrieri connected to find Jesse Hedequist who jumped up to head the ball into the corner of the net at 84:34.  
  • Shikhar Motupally looked to tie the match just a minute later, but his shot was turned away by Trachtenberg. 
  • With the seconds ticking down, Gurion put a pass to the middle of the box for Balestrieri who put the ball past a diving Trachtenberg to tie the match at 89:90. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • MIT outshot Suffolk 14-10, including 12-5 in the second half.  
  • Hedequist notched his third career goal while Balestrieri got his fifth. 
  • Gurion notched his seventh career game with two points, as his two assists in the match are a career-best. 
  • Ardila turned away two shots while Trachtenberg made four saves in the match. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT stays on the road as they head to Roger Williams for a 6:00 PM contest on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00 PM. The Rams will host Dean College on Sunday, September 6 at 1:00 PM.
