Football Rolls to Record-Breaking 70-0 Win Over New England College

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Jimmy Conners, Leo Mont and Colter Mahabir each scored two rushing touchdowns while quarterback Ryan Treptow connected with Keegan Doody through the air and added a score on the ground as part of the MIT football team's record-breaking 70-0 non-conference victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.  

MIT outscored NEC 35-0 in a second quarter that saw Mateo Kamarck block a punt before recovering it in the end zone and Nate Gehrs recover an errant snap on a punt attempt for a score of his own. Willem van Roijen added a pair of second half interceptions as MIT cruised to its largest victory in program history.  

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 70, New England College 0 
  • Records: MIT 2-0 Overall, New England College 0-2 Overall 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Dominic Hess intercepted the first pass attempt of the game from NEC starter Aiden Hughes, setting up the Engineers at midfield for MIT's first drive of the game.  
  • Conners rushed the ball four times on the opening drive, including an eight-yard gain up the middle for a touchdown on his final attempt. 
  • After NEC went three-and-out on its next drive, MIT looked like a threat to score on its second drive of the game, but NEC's Madison Kaevryel hit Doody across the middle to break up a pass that was intercepted by Ethan Cenesca. Cenesca returned the ball to the MIT 40-yard line, but the NEC offense could not capitalize and came up short on a turnover on downs.  
  • MIT took the 7-0 lead into the second quarter before taking complete control of the contest. The Engineers scored seven touchdowns in the second quarter, including a pair of scores on special teams.  
  • Treptow opened the quarter with a 45-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 14-0 at 13:48. Conners added another rushing score at the 7:00 minute mark, increasing the MIT lead to 21-0. 
  • An MIT penalty helped NEC pick up a first down on its next drive, but the Pilgrims were once again forced to punt. The ensuing MIT drive ended with Treptow connecting with Doody for a 19-yard touchdown pass to increase the MIT lead to 28-0 with 2:11 left before halftime. 
  • With 2:00 to play until halftime, MIT forced NEC into another three-and-out to set up a punt attempt. However, Ben Roy's attempt was met in the backfield by Kamarck who recovered his own block in the end zone to make the score 35-0.  
  • With the ball back in NEC's hands just 1:47 before halftime, MIT's defense stopped three straight runs to push NEC back to its own 21-yard line and force another punt. This time the snap went over Roy's head and landed at the goal line before it was recovered by Gehrs for a touchdown. 
  • The Engineers opened the second half with a methodical 11-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by a six-yard Leo Mont touchdown run.  
  • Willem van Roijen ended the next NEC drive with an interception, but MIT was forced to punt on its next possession. The following NEC drive resulted in another three-and-out, but Parker McClain blocked the NEC punt to set up MIT on the three-yard line. Mont only needed one carry on the next MIT drive to make the score 56-0 in favor of the Engineers.  
  • van Roijen added his second interception of the half on the next NEC drive, picking off NEC back-up quarterback DeAnjelo DeSaena at the NEC 40-yard line and returning the ball to the NEC 10-yard line. van Roijen's second interception set up a score for Mahabir that made the MIT lead 63-0 with 1:09 left in the third quarter. Mahabir also added a two-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to complete the 70-0 scoreline. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Engineers set the modern era (1988) program record for points in a game and margin of victory. 
  • MIT's 10 touchdowns set a program record. 
  • Pelletier was a perfect 10-for-10 on extra points to set a program record. 
  • MIT's defense set a program record for fewest yards allowed with 18. 
  • The 70-0 win was the largest shutout victory for the program. 
  • MIT is now 2-0 all-time against NEC and has outscored the Pilgrims 125-0.

  • MIT is off next week before opening the NEWMAC season on Saturday, September 26 at defending champion Springfield. The kickoff will be at 3:00 PM.
