Men’s Soccer Opens NEWMAC Play with 2-2 Draw at WPI

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with WPI during the opening weekend of NEWMAC regular season play on Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium. MIT rallied twice to earn the draw, with Max Cassidy scoring his first career goal in the first half and Charles Lai scoring to tie the game at 2-2 in the second half. 
 
THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 2, WPI 2  
  • Records: MIT (1-3-2 Overall, 0-0-1 NEWMAC), WPI (0-3-2 Overall, 0-0-1 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • WPI got on the board first when Michael Montabana played the ball across to Anir AitDowd for his first goal of the season at 35:03. 
  • The WPI lead was short
  • WPI got the upper hand again in the second half, retaking the lead at 60:05 when
  • It took just over nine minutes, but MIT found another answer in the second half, tying up the contest at 69:41 when Charles Lai scored his second goal of his career on a long throw from rookie Eli Mick.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT outshot WPI, 18-12, but the teams were equal in shots on goal, 7-7.
  • The teams played to a 0-0 draw last year. MIT is now 1-3-2 in its last six meetings with WPI. 
  • Ketnouvong and MIT goalkeeper Nicolas Santos-Shin each recorded five saves in the contest.
  • Lai now has two career goals; he netted one in the MIT season-opener versus Western New England last season.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will host UMass Boston on Wednesday, September 23 at 6:00 PM. WPI will travel to Trinity (CT) for a 6:00 PM non-conference tilt on Monday, September 21.
