CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three goals by Genevieve Caruso, including two in the first half, helped No. 15 Amherst College defeat the MIT field hockey team in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Jack Barry Field.
 
THE BASICS:

• Score: No. 15 Amherst 4, MIT 0
• Records: MIT (3-4 Overall); No. 15 Amherst (4-2 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Amherst opened the scoring with 4:54 left in the first period when a pass into the circle bounced off goalie Alexia Ninios's feet and was deflected to Caruso who quickly slipped it past Ninios as both players fell to the ground.
• Most of the second quarter was a back-and-forth affair until Caruso put another falling shot past Ninios in the 27^th minute. Ella Kang quickly increased the Mammoths' lead to 3-0 when she sprinted to the circle and dodged past a defender with 1:42 on the clock.
• MIT earned a penalty corner early in the third quarter; however, Amherst went on to generate four shots and a penalty corner. Sammi Blocher recorded a defensive save as Ninios turned away a shot, helping keep the Engineers within striking distance.
• Just 1:06 into the fourth quarter, Caruso completed the hat trick as she sent a low shot inside the near post. MIT made a late surge as it registered five shots and three penalty corners during the last 4:40 of regulation but it could not end the shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Ninios ended the night with three saves.
• Grace Puchalski turned away one shot in 51 minutes of action while Kate Grady notched a save down the stretch.
• The Mammoths had the upper hand in shots (12-6), shots on goal (8-2), and penalty corners (5-4).

UP NEXT:

• Both teams resume conference play on the road on Saturday, September 26. MIT will face NEWMAC foe Clark University at 2:00 PM while Amherst will travel to No. 4 Williams College for an 11:30 AM NESCAC game.
