Field Hockey Defeats UNE, 2-0

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Ingrid Tomovski was a factor in both of MIT's goals as the Engineers defeated the University of New England, 2-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 2, UNE 0
  • Records: MIT (2-0 Overall); UNE (1-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Following an early UNE penalty corner, the game was a back-and-forth affair until MIT earned a penalty corner with 5:03 left in the first quarter. Janie Thomas put a shot on cage; however, Ella Reeves came up with the defensive save. The Nor'easters quickly received a penalty corner, but the resulting shot was saved by Alexia Ninios. The Engineers then got on the scoreboard with 2:26 remaining. Tomovski sent a hard-hit ball from outside the circle on the far side and it bounced through traffic until it was redirected by Jane Tortorella at the far post.
  • The second quarter saw MIT have 2-1 edge in penalty corners and a 3-1 margin in shots. Attempts by Drew Hussar and Thomas were blocked while Reeves notched another defensive save on a blast by Audrey Oh. On the other end of the field, Ninios turned away a shot from Reeves.
  • The stalemate continued in the third quarter as the Engineers had a 6-5 advantage in shots (3-2 on goal) while both teams received a penalty corner. In the final seconds of the frame, Sammi Blocher preserved the shutout as she chased down the UNE attack during a breakaway and blocked a shot at the last moment.
  • MIT controlled the action in the fourth quarter as it put five shots on goal, eventually finding the back of the cage in the 54th minute. In transition, Natasha Parker sent a throughball that was collected by Tomovski between midfield and the 23-meter line. She then dodged multiple defenders before hitting a shot to the far post.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ninios ended the day with five saves and her second career shutout.
  • The Engineers led the way in shots (16-11), shots on goal (11-5), and penalty corners (5-4).

  • MIT will travel to No. 10 Endicott College on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for a 7:00 PM game.
