HARWICH, Mass. (May 19, 2011)—One of the most successful seasons in MIT baseball history came to a close on Thursday morning as MIT was beaten 3-2 by the Tufts University Jumbos and eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. The Engineers, who were seeded fourth in the New England Regional at Whitehouse Field, finish their season with a 25-15 record.

MIT took a 1-0 lead in the top of first when designated hitter A.J. Hansborough singled through the left side to plate senior center fielder Brian Doyle, who led off with a single and advanced to second on single by shortstop Bryan Macomber.

Macomber and senior right fielder Ryne Barry each had two hits for MIT, which ended up with seven as a team.

The Jumbos took a 2-1 lead in the third on RBI singles by Sam Sager and Ian Goldberg. MIT tied the game at two in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI groundout by Doyle, but the #1 seeded Jumbos took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Second baseman Frank Petroskey reached on a single and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring an unearned run on David LeResche's ground-out to third.

Torre Swanson took the loss for MIT, pitching three and a third innings for MIT and allowing three runs, two of them earned, on nine hits. Swanson struck out two batters and did not walk a Jumbo. Chris Vaughan and Henry Zhu pitched six innings of scoreless ball in relief, neither of them allowing a walk.

Tufts starter David Ryan pitched eight strong innings, walking four and striking out four to get the victory. Edward Bernstein worked a scoreless ninth, fanning two, to earn a save.

David Orlowitz and Chase Rose both went 3-for-4 to lead nationally ranked Tufts (27-8-1) to a 14-hit attack.
