MIT Sweeps Doubleheader from Clark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Torre Swanson (Redding, Calif.) pitched a one-hit shutout for MIT in game one of its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader with Clark University this afternoon, leading the Engineers to a 4-0 win. MIT completed the doubleheader sweep with a 14-hit attack in game two that resulted in a 16-2 victory for the Engineers.

It was the second straight complete-game shutout for Swanson, who struck out six without a walk in his seven-inning gem. The only hit that Clark (7-22, 3-12 NEWMAC) could muster was a bunt single down the first base line by freshman Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) with two outs in the fifth. Junior Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.) went all the way for the Cougars on the mound, striking out six without a walk while giving up nine hits.

MIT (14-13, 6-9 NEWMAC) picked up the only run it would need in the third when sophomore Sean Karson (Winter Park, Fla.) singled, stole second, and then came home on a throwing error by the Cougar shortstop. The Engineers picked up two more in the fifth, with one run scoring on another error and sophomore Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) adding an RBI single. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Senior A.J. Hansborough (Deltona, Fla.) in the sixth accounted for the final tally for MIT.

In game two MIT broke out on top early with four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the second. A hit batter and a pair of walks loaded the bases to start the inning for the Engineers. Hansborough hit a grounder to third, but the throw home got away, allowing two runs to score. Another run came in on a balk before Karson picked up the only hit of the inning, an RBI single to right.

Hansborough delivered two more runs in the third with a bases loaded single that made it 6-0. MIT added two unearned runs in the fourth before breaking the game open in the sixth when the Engineers sent 12 hitters to the plate, getting five singles and drawing four walks as they scored seven times. Hansborough drove in his third run of the game with a base hit, with Karson, Mangrum, senior Zach Carr (Chatham, N.J.) and freshman Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) all delivering run-scoring singles in the inning.

Senior Chris Hendrix (Richardson, Texas) was strong as well in his start for MIT, giving up just two hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out six on his way to picking up the win. Clark picked up those two hits in the top of the seventh in consecutive at-bats when senior Matthew Bohl (Amherst, Mass.) singled and then came around to score on a double to left center by senior Nicholas Kellogg (Florence, Mass.). The Cougars scored their other run in the eighth when freshman Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground out, and then came in to score on a single by senior Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.).

MIT will remain at home for its next contest, hosting Wesleyan University on April 18 at 4:00 p.m. Clark will play its next game at home as well as it hosts Gordon College on April 17 at 5:00 p.m.
