CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT put on an offensive show this afternoon, banging out 18 hits and scoring runs in every inning but two as the Engineers rolled to a 19-3 win over visiting Worcester State University this afternoon. Every starter had at least one hit for MIT and sophomore Robert Bertucci (Bellville, Ill.) was strong in his first start of the season as the Engineers won their season-high fifth straight game.

It did not take long for MIT (16-13) to get on the board, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first inning. With one away sophomore Sean Karson (Winter Park, Fla.) drew a walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch before a single by sophomore Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) moved him up to third. Junior Ricardo Perez (Vienna, Va.) then brought him in to score, lofting a sacrifice fly to center.

Perez drove in the next MIT run as well, doubling to right center in the third to bring around Mangrum, who had doubled ahead of him. Perez's hit brought in freshman Jared Kuzio (Franklin, Mass.) out of the bullpen for Worcester State (9-21) in relief of freshman starter, D.J. Colbert (Somersworth, N.H.). He struck out his first batter before walking freshman Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) and then throwing a wild pitch that put runners on second and third. Junior James McKinney (Wakefield, R.I.) brought both runners home with a single to center to make it 4-0.

MIT's offense kept cranking out the runs, adding two more on an RBI single from Mangrum in the fourth and a pair of unearned runs in the fifth that came around to score on a throwing error on the Lancers shortstop. That was more than enough support for Bertucci, who did not allow a hit until the fourth. He picked up the win, going five innings and allowing just the one hit, striking out six and walking two.

MIT broke the game open in the sixth when the Engineers sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring eight times. Karson and sophomore Jon Rae (Palo Alto, Calif.) both drove in a pair of runs with singles, with freshman Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) adding a pinch-hit, two-run double.

Worcester State broke into the scoring column in the seventh off the MIT bullpen. Junior Kurt Sabacinski (Worcester, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk before Joseph Carlier (Rockland, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Freshman David Ruggiero (Peabody, Mass.) singled to center to plate the first run and freshman Jeff Bolio (Oxford, Mass.) later added a sac fly for the Lancers. Worcester State added another run in the eighth when Sabacinski was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a wild pitch. He then came around to score on a pinch-hit single by freshman Brian O'Connor (West Boylston, Mass.).

Senior Zach Carr (Chatham, N.J.) and freshman Phil Reiser (Alpharetta, Ga.) added RBI singles in the seventh for MIT.

MIT will open a key three-game NEWMAC series on Friday, taking on WPI in Worcester in a single game starting at 3:30 p.m. Worcester State will play again tomorrow when it travels to Becker College for a 4:00 p.m. game.
