MIT Rolls Past Suffolk, 12-4

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT scored a run in the first inning and went on to score in four others as the Engineers cranked out an 18-hit attack in a 12-4 non-conference baseball win over Suffolk University this afternoon at Briggs Field. Junior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) and sophomore Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) each had three hits to lead MIT.

MIT (24-11) started quickly when Mangrum led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right center and then scored on a sac fly by senior James McKinney (Wakefield, R.I.). The Engineers then added three more in the third off of Suffolk starter, sophomore Eli Libby (Sudbury, Mass.). Senior Andrew Jeanguenat (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) started things off with a double and then scored when Mangrum's base hit to right was misplayed. A passed ball moved Mangrum to third from where he scored on McKinney's single into the hole at second. With two down senior Ricardo Perez (Vienna, Va.) made it 4-0 with a single to center.

Suffolk (29-13) got one run back in the fourth when junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) and senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) started the inning with singles. Another base hit loaded the bases for junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.), who hit into a fielder's choice that plated the first run. The Rams made it a two-run game in the fifth when sophomore Adam Johnson (Georgetown, Mass.) doubled to lead off, moved to third on wild pitch and then scored on a ground out by junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.).

A four-run fifth for MIT proved to be decisive as the Engineers built an 8-2 lead. A Mangrum double and a pair of walks loaded the bases for MIT. With two away the Engineers came up with consecutive RBI singles by Tew and  sophomores K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Karl Sorensen (Blacksburg, Va.) that bumped the lead to six runs.

MIT added two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Suffolk scored once in the eighth on a home run by Cunningham and another in the ninth, but it was too little, too late for the Rams.

Freshman Nicholas Locascio (Naples, Fla.) started for MIT and picked up the win by giving up seven hits and two runs in five innings, striking out five without issuing a walk to improve to 4-1. Libby gave up seven hits and six runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings to take the loss.

McKinney, sophomore Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Parent all drove in a pair of runs for MIT. Cunningham was one of three players to collect a pair of hits for Suffolk and drove in a pair to lead the Rams.
